Malaika 'Mal' Jones is the only child of Vikram Avasarala, a Yaksha, and Helen Jones, a normal human woman from New York.

Personal history
Her father arrived in New York at the age of 22 and met Helen Jones. They had their first and only child, Malaika Avasarala, one year later. When Mal was a few months old, he left both Helen and Mal and disappeared.
Mal discovers her yakshini powers of illusion at the age of twelve. Mal keeps her powers secret from her mother, fearing for her safety.
When her mother moves to Rumford, Connecticut, to take a job as a paralegal, she joins great Mountain High. However, the school is not very welcoming and as the only brown girl at school, Mal finds it hard to fit in.
She is envious of her classmates' rich lifestyles and starts an illegal side hustle in order to be able to afford a car at the age of sixteen.
Mal is almost caught by the local Sergeant, Ranjeet 'RJ' Singh, who tells her she is the granddaughter of Srinivasa Avasarala Avasarala. Mal is offered a place at Legend Valley Academy by her grandfather and transfers to the Academy in her Fourth Year.
