    Personal history

Leelavati Ganguly is the youngest child of two tiger shifters. Her early childhood was spent in the eastern city of Kolkota, in West Bengal, India.   Leela has one elder brother, who is a stunt coordinator for Indian cinema. He also moonlights as a bounty hunter. Her father is a lawyer, and her mother is an activist for women's rights and LGBTQ rights in the country.   Leela is a pacifist and feels that dialogue can help resolve conflicts instead of violence and aggression. As a scholarship student at Legend Valley Academy, Leela is very careful about following the rules and keeping her grades up. She has a good relationship with the Principal and faculty at the Academy, but her tendency to follow the rules has made it difficult to make friends in her class.   In Notorious, Mal is assigned to be Leela's roommate, since no one in her class wanted to room with Leela. Mal and Leela bond over their outsider status and become best friends.   Because of her pacifist nature, Leela is at odds with Carla, a werewolf student in her Shifter Magic class. In Notorious, Carla is paired with Leela in an in-class assignment. She believes Leela is not being aggressive enough during the assignment, which led to their receiving a lower grade than Carla would like. The dispute turns ugly when Carla's boyfriend Micheal Abernathy gets involved in an altercation between the two during a gym class.   With her pacifist nature, Leela feels she doesn't fit in with her family and struggles to accept herself.
“Yes, but you would be living a lie.” Leela shook her head. “You’ll never be really happy unless you’re true to yourself.”   “Easy for you to say. You don’t know what I’m going through,” Izzy shot back, goaded into anger.   “Don’t I?” Leela raised an eyebrow. “My whole family are fighters. Going back generations. My great-grandfather was a freedom fighter who rebelled against the British. My mother’s an activist who doesn’t let death threats stop her. My dad once broke a guy’s arm cause he tried to grope my mom on the tram.” She shrugged. “That’s how they met, actually. My brother’s a stunt coordinator for Bollywood films. He moonlights with my uncle as a bounty hunter.”   Leela sighed. “And then there’s me, the pacifist tiger. I get squeamish when I see blood, I hate fighting, and I think the first step in conflict resolution is having an open dialogue.” She shook her head. “I don’t fit in with my family either, and it took me a long time to make them understand me. But they did. You have to give your family the chance to understand you, too. They may just surprise you.”   - Righteous, Legend Valley Academy, Book 3
