The Splitting of the Evening Isles

The Evening Isles have historically always been a highly contested area due to their strategically relevant location at the edge of the Silver Sea. Whoever holds the Evening Isles has control over all trade in and out of the Silver Sea region, which puts their owner into a very powerful position.

Even before the kingdoms of Eleonis and Aguilear were founded in 612 CE and 647 CE respectively, Lords from around the Silver Sea frequently fought over dominion of the Evening Isles. After the kingdoms were founded, many wars were fought between the two over the Evening Isles. This eventually led to one of the most important and most devastating sea battles in the history of the Silver Sea region in 919 CE.

This battle was won by the eleonian fleet. Smaller conflicts took place in the following decades, until the two kingdoms agreed that they could not keep going like that. In 986 CE, they began to negotiate a possible agreement. They reached consensus after a year of negotiations and put the results in a treaty in 987 CE.

The document details that the Evening Isles would be split between the kingdoms as evenly as possible. The two large northern islands have belonged to Eleonis since, while the one big and two small southern islands became aguilean territory. This split also separated Mearia, the capital city of the Evening Isles, into two halves.

The city spans across the southern tip of the northern islands to the northern tip of the big southern island and is connected by a large stone bridge arching across the harbour. A marking stone in the bridge rails specifies the exact location of the border cutting through the harbour strait.

The treaty puts House Mearis, the ruling family of the Evening Isles in a unique and somewhat complicated position. Their lordship now has territories on eleonian and aguilean soil. It therefore is part of both kingdoms while not belonging to either one properly, which makes for an interesting bargaining position.

The treaty has helped the kingdoms to be able to build a solid diplomatic relationship. This became particularly relevant in the Great War, when the kingdoms of Eleonis, Aguilear and Lupear made an alliance to defeat a strong enemy. It is possible that the Great War would have ended very differently if Eleonis and Aguilear hadn't made a contract about the Evening Isles over a century before. To this day, the contract made in 987 CE has held up strong.
