Subversive Spire

History before the war

During the The unification war, a good number of explorer, delve into the wild to find artefacts, that could give the The redwood alliance an edge in the war. As part of this effort in a subterranean facility, they found a white spire with porous surfaces. This structure became popular really fast among the explorers as it seem to cause some sickness, to those who approached it. Many hoped, that, If they could learn its secrets, it could be the edge, the The redwood alliance needed to turn the tile of the war.
Unfortunately, even when it didn't take them long to learn how to use it, they discover targeting royals exclusively was harder than initially thought. Soldiers were easier, but it would apply to both sides equally. Since the sickness could be reverted with a margin of days, and with the war turning a really bad turn, this would have been considered acceptable collateral damage, if it wasn't because they could not find a way to move the artefact closer to the front lines.

History after the war

No slave will be kept, in the peninsula, as long as we can stop it. Freedom or death.
After the war was lost, with the reveal of the decree, which would turn all alliance people into slaves. The people which were working on the artefact decided to give it another purpose. One that would honour, the spirit of the now, death alliance. They would target it towards slaves, achieving two porpuses:
  1. It would deter, slave hunts between the people in the peninsula for the nobles brought here, as they would not last
  2. It would end the miserable existence of those who were hunted or brought here to serve them
Another more ambitious idea was also drafted, using the very useful fact, that the disease looks fatal, days before it actually is. They would monopolize the position dealing with death and disease. Once they got the "dead" slaves, they would free them and traffic them outside of Entrelai in hiding. This is the disease, which is now know as Slave death

Appearance

The artefact itself is a white twisted spire without end. It is as tall as an adult man. It gives the appearance of being broken, as it does not finish the spiral, finishing abruptly at 1.70m tall. The spire is empty inside, but a clear force field prevents anyone from entering from the top.   Regarding its diameter, It has 40cm on its base and 25cm on its tallest point.   Its clearly porous to touch, in some areas, while completely flat in others, following a geometrical pattern. The more frequent speculation regarding this structure is, the porous areas are the ones used to release the nanomachines which cause the disease.

The war
The unification war was fought between a loose alliance of town and cities in the east, The redwood alliance, wishing to remain independent and the royal forces coming from Spiralai, wanting to unify the area from the mountains to the sea. The royals won.
The decree
As repayment from the cost of war, Entrelai king, decree, all soldiers, conspirators and their families, were to serve as slaves to those loyal to the unification. Since in practices, this could apply to almost anyone living in the alliance cities, slave hunts followed on all of them and most of them were abandoned, as people run to the refuge of The Westwood Forest
The conspirancy
Some of the people, which were trying to get the device to the battlefield, decide to keep it secret and use it to conform the alliance ideas, and to cope with the realities the decree was imposing. This group, has been able to both create the Slave death, shape the society in the peninsula and save an innumerable number of lives.
