Demon Lord Rank/Title in Lanternal | World Anvil

Demon Lord

Demon Lords are not born. A Lord earns their title based on the greatness of their deeds, be they powerful or terrible. At any point in history, there can only be eighty-eight Demon Lords in power with The Hierarchy of Devils . Should a devil be usurped by another, the usurper's rank will rise and the fallen lord be stricken of their rank (though posthumously still referred by their title). Though rare, were some new devil to arise and prove themselves worthy of the rank of Demon Lord and no open position in the Hierarchy of Devils exists, a council of Demon Lords will conduct who, if any, among them deserve to have their titles stripped to make way for the new powerful devil.

Power and Might

There is no set definition for what act constitutes admission as a Demon Lord, and as such the histories of the Hierchary of Devils are wild and fantastical. Where some Lords are recognized for their grand creations such as Lord Akante's flying fortress Kakuatan, others are revered for their immense power such as Reja Gann command over millions. Some devils are recognized for less grand acts, yet still impressive, such as Carnifex eating a former demon lord or Peltavak's inability to stay dead.   A Demon Lord has no obligations or duties to perform to maintain their rank. Some Demon Lords will volunteer to participate in the House of Lords and serve as a voting council to enact new members into their ranks. Many Demon Lords are proud of their status and will put forth swift, often violent, action should they believe another is unworthy of their rank. Action from the devils higher in the hierarchy (who rarely participate in the House of Lords) will prevent the council from making drastic actions or voting for perceived dishonorable devils.
