Quai Character in Laminarum | World Anvil

Quai (K-eye)

The Quai is a supernatural being that exists in the marsh continent of "Mot D'nir." It undergoes a symbiosis with local flora, giving it a faint and distinct green glow when covered with shadow. These "Quai territories" are present in roughly 10 core locations throughout the marshes, where they are revered and worshipped by the Tara-Jhen towns and cities that surround them. The symbiosis is also able to extend to fauna, but it usually selects one species to ordain with gifts en masse. The main benefits is access to the Quai's realm of origin, where the visitors can go through expediated travel to their destination. The exact nature of the realm is unknown, but most theorize that within the exclusive realm, the different territories are pulled together so that their borders meet. The endowment of this gift has made the Tara-Jhen the dominant species of the marshes but has resulted in conflicts with the often suppressed Naga-Tel. These conflicts are often destructive, as is evident by the banishment of the Thanids by the lizardfolk upon recovering their gifts from the "thieves." A more contemporary example is the enslavement of the Kaban as punishment for "stealing" the gifts. This enslavement is rooted deep in history, as it lasted for over 1200 years, only ending when the Augury forcefully assimilated the northern marsh, roughly 150 years from the present.   What the Quai truly desires is unknown, but one thing is for certain: it wishes to spread its reach as far as possible. this has led to political strife, as the more geographical territory is covered by the Quai, the less time is saved by traveling into the Realm of the Quai between territories, as the realm resembles the territories that have been overtaken. The conflict between strategy and faith has been a constant push and pull in Mot D'nir politics.
