Elvish Homesickness Condition in Laminarum | World Anvil

Elvish Homesickness

"Poor breath, anemia, necrosis at the fingertips... I can offer any manner of teas to help you, but if you truly want my opinion? Just go home!"
— Rembrandt of Shellbay to Professor Dumont

Effects of Elvish Homesickness

often called "traveler's bane," elvish homesickness is a degenerative disease the progresses the longer the elf is away from Silse . Affecting roughly 3% of traveling elves, it is recommended that any who begin developing symptoms return to their home immediately. While it could take months, or even years, to die from the condition, extended time away from home could both cause permanent injury. Further, as elves only age as a result of stress, illness, or injury, those who refuse to return home will begin biologically aging.
The condition's trigger is unknown, but it is considered incurable. If you have gotten symptoms from leaving home before, you are certain to experience them again upon traveling. While one can implement a series of magical or technological solutions to the symptoms, one can not entirely negate their effects.

Negative

  • General degradation of physical health the more time spent away from the elvish homeland of Silse
  • weariness, cracking of the skin, pale visage
  • necrosis of appendages, followed by intermittent numbness
  • Decline of eyesight and hearing
  • joint pain
  • more susceptible to mental manipulation via magic

Positive

  • Often experience deep feelings of nostalgia
  • Rarely, or perhaps never, experience nightmares
  • according to legends, the devilish Ithitar ignore those who suffer from this condition
  • guaranteed job position of "beggar" in any land that is not your own.
Overall, while there are a few recorded positives to the condition, most would rather go without. However, those with the condition have been paid hefty sums to take part in Eldurstery research regarding the planes.

Known Victims

Greater Purpose?
Some elvish researchers, particularly those concerned with the influence of Melifi on the world, have a vested interest in those who suffer from this condition. Due to the shackle it puts upon the individuals, forcing them to stay in Silse, they theorize that the illness is intended to curb fate. Perhaps those who are forced to stay on the continent have a greater purpose to achieve within the lands borders. More lately they have wondered if its the opposite, and dark forces wish to keep them from accomplishing something abroad.
