Anamnesis is a hypothetical spell oft mentioned in scripture or fables regarding
Chaimut. The spell in question is said to remove a given concept, item, or person from Laminarum's communal memory, sending it to
Chaimut's Temporal Court. As a result, the item is removed from history and impossible to recollect. Often used as a trope to get storybook characters out of conflicts, many theorize that there is a legitimate basis for the spell's existence. Further, it may have even been performed in the past.
In Popular Culture
While the spell appears in several works, the oldest known example comes from a preserved children's book called "Autumn's Walk," where the protagonist finds herself searching for her home after being abandoned on a carriage ride. Throughout Autumn's journey, she finds herself accruing debt and favors from a bargaining devil named Thirik Phalival. When she eventually makes her way home to
Jerborg, she owes the devil more than she can offer. To resolve the conflict, Autumn prays to
Chaimut, who performs the spell and makes the devil forget about the initial bargain.
Over time, the trope became popular amongst playwrights, resolving many conflicts in popular shows. As critics grew exhausted with the poor manner of conflict resolution, a
Tara-Jhen writer by the name Rana Dirib exerted a rule on his stories, claiming that the spell only functions during
Chaimut's Fall. While the insertion of this trope remained common, foreshadowing the date within the story was considered clever at the time.
In Scholarly Circles
After the trope became popular in creative fiction or "historical" plays, diviners in
Kala came across the concept through media osmosis. Originally misunderstanding the concept as factual, they underwent practical experiments and research at Jan Timar. Ironically, this misunderstanding made headway in discovering a historical basis for the spell. Since the original paper's publication, the
Augury has taken a vested interest in uncovering the methods to perform the ritual.
Anamnesis Retroversion is considered the pinnacle of divination, though it is theoretically impossible to remember performing the spell once it is complete. Others believe it may also be possible to reverse the spell, removing something from
Chaimut's Temporal Court so that it may be remembered once more. The spell has been attempted several times, and most believe it is only achievable on
Chaimut's Fall.
Chaimut's Temporal Court
Chaimut's Temporal Court is a realm from an unknown plane of origin. Within rests anything forgotten by history in any plane, be it buildings, scrolls, people, or concepts. Ruled over by
Chaimut and his servants, none are to speak of what they see inside unless it has been allowed by
Chaimut himself.
While plenty of research exists about summoning matter from this realm, there's little information as to how one may access the realm itself. Interplaner research into the realm was popular before
The Silence, but most believe that entering the realm has dire consequences for outsiders. Some believe that you could retrieve any manner of treasures from the Temporal Court, but the likely outcome is that the travelers themselves would be forgotten, forever trapped in the court.
