Session 3

The third chapter of our tale begins with our heroes being taken into custody by the guards of Wrain's Hall. While the party nearly decided to confront the guards, both Sam Calas and Liaden O'Legal advocated for them to simply comply as they had nothing to hide.

Our heroes were held for a number of hours before Prior Arthis came to speak with them. After a brief admonishment from the man, Arthis discussed giving the party a false alibi to help them get out of jail and continue their investigation. They were also reminded that they should probably speak to the pathologist as the bodies are due to be buried.

As our heroes made to leave, Captain Solis confronted them about their alibi. After an awkward exchange and the captain's begrudging acceptance of our heroes' alibi, the party were on their way. Their first stop was the morgue, to discuss the bodies with the pathologist.

The pathologist greeted them at the door, apologising for the lack of bodies as two of them had already been taken for burial. Once pleasantries were exchanged, the pathologist gave our heroes free reign over how to conduct their investigation into the bodies. Curiously enough, the pathologist's notes proved to be highly illuminating. the dates and times of death that our heroes had received from the guards were contradicted by this new evidence, and also implied that multiple people were involved in the killings, though the modus operandi was consistent.

Upon concluding their investigation, Sam decided to ask the pathologist about the latest body to arrive at the morgue, that of the recently deceased Nathan Cattas. The pathologist insisted that no information was to be shared about the case as of yet, but that it was clear the method of killing was different. Rather than having his throat cut and tongue removed, he was simply stabbed in the back. Satisfied with the information they had acquired, our heroes decided to change tact, and investigate the next avenue of inquiry: Nathan's murder

The group reconvened outside Nathan's home, greeted by guards that had wandered that very street a few days earlier during Oryim and Liaden's initial search of the property. After an attempt at distracting the guards through seduction by Kalydin, the guards asked Kalydin to leave. At which point the others approached with the Prior's writ of conduct, which gained them entry.

Once inside, Oryim immediately noticed that the traps had been dismantled. A quick initial search concluded that the house had already been searched by other officials, and that finding any evidence may prove difficult. Knowing the layout of the building already, Oryim and Liaden made a bee-line for the study to inspect the desks and their hidden compartments. While Sal's desk remained empty and showed little signs of use, Nathan's desk had been searched thoroughly. After an initial assessment of the desk, the party accessed the hidden compartments of Nathan's desk, only to find that his files on the guards had been taken, though his file of the Prior still remained.

Using her skills as a tracker, Liaden noticed two pairs of faint boot prints on the floor and decided to follow them. This led her to find that while one pair had simply come in through thr front door and into the study straight away the other pair had come in through a window, destroyed the trap there and assaulted Nathan from behind. These tracks then spent some time near both desks in the study before returning to the window and then disappearing. The only evidence left outside the window was a muddy, ripped cloth that had the initials G.F.

In an attempt to get information from Cheno about who might live in this town with those initials, Sam and Kalydin were invited to dinner with the Prior, Captain Solis and his wife; Gloria Farlow, a dignitary of the House Farlow banking guild. As part of this agreement, Liaden was tasked with watching over the captain's son for the evening while Oryim was informed that they would either need him at dinner to ensure nothing went wrong, or at the Farlow household to keep an eye on Liaden in the case of foul play.

After being dressed in clothes suited for fine dining: Sam, Kalydin, Arthis, Gerard and Gloria sat down for a meal where small talk was exchanged, including the fact that Captain Solis was tasked with repairing Gloria's handkerchief earlier, and that she had paid for many of the luxuries he was fortunate enough to experience. The evening was cut short however, as a grey, clawed hand began to emerge from the bushes at the far end of the priory's garden.

On the other side of town, Liaden and Oryim began to watch over the young master Gareth Farlow, as he regailed them with a story about a giant lizard that climbed up and down the building with a knife in its mouth. He informed Liaden that after the lizard had scaled the house, he heard his father shouting. Shortly after the shouting had ended the lizard climbed down again. It was no more than five minutes after this tale was shared, that Liaden and Oryim heard a knock at the door.
