Session 11
This chapter begins not with our three heroes in Fatoris but with the one they had left behind, Kalydin. Shortly after his companions' departure, he looked to Obi and Arthur for guidance, slowly picking up short phrases in sign-language. It would not be long before trouble seemed to catch up with the young summoner.
Only two days into his stay here, he was asked to take part in a ritual that Obi and Arthur had been preparing. The two of them seemed to be quite busy in those two days arranging the chapel as they had mentioned that a storm was imminently approaching. As the three of them sat down to begin, Kalydin felt a strange feeling from inside of him and, simultaneously, Obi halted the ritual and turned to face the young man.
Obi was blunt, asking Kalydin how much he knew himself. When Kalydin responded honestly, stating he knew very little, Obi informed him that he was 'repressed' and needed to unlock his repressed memories before they could conduct the ritual. Thus the room was changed so that a different ritual could take place. Kalydin was lain on the ground with a cushion beneath his head as Obi began to chant.
Kalydin, whose eyes were shut, heard the chanting grow fainter and further away as he seemed to be floating an an endless emptiness, deprived of all senses. As he drifted in the void, he eventually felt something press against his back and found himself lying on a floor made from darkened stone. Around him were doors in their frames, standing alone and at different angles. Curiosity got the better of him, as he decided to open the nearest one, and peek through the crack.
What formed before him was a sight he had seen before, though from another angle. Here he was approaching a pair of guards in Wrain's Hall in an attempt to seduce one, if not both of them and failing miserably. Content to never relive the embarrassment of what followed, Kalydin slammed the door and searched for a potentially more pleasant memory.
As he wandered through the labyrinth of doors he made his way to what seemed to be the end of them, where one door stood alone. However, unlike the other doors this one showed signs of age. It was roughly hewn, cracked and wreathed in chains that ended in thick locks. As Kalydin approached the door the sky above roiled as clouds formed into a dark spiral over head and a source less wind began to pick up.
As Kalydin's hands fell upon the door and grabbed a chain, the wind grew louder and stronger, as if it were trying desperately to pull him away. The ground behind him cracked as the doors behind him drifted away into the swirling clouds above and now around him. Alone and on the precipice of what appeared to be a bottomless ravine, Kalydin resolved himself and tugged the chain as hard as he could. The chain groaned as it was strained against the stone work and the sound of splintering metal echoed in the howling tempest.
As Kalydin felt the chain starting to give way, he also felt a hand grab at his ankle. From the void below, which was now nipping at Kalydin's heels, emerged a hand and forearm made of bright marble. Unable to make out any other features to the being, Kalydin had little choice. He held on as tightly as he could while the arm attempted to drag him below. As the made one final pull, he felt the chain give way and watched as it tumbled to the floor. However, that chain was the only thing holding him to the door frame and soon he was pulled below the surface and back into the senseless void.
Later Kalydin was shaken awake by his angelic companion, Seraph. As the two of them looked around they appeared to be no longer in a cave on a mountain, but rather in a forest not far from a beaten path. A quick search yielded that there was a town not far from where they had awoken, and given that the storm had broken ground, they sought shelter.
Meanwhile, back in Fatoris, Liaden O'Legal and Oryim debriefed on the night prior. Their discovery that some of the people from the cave had gotten out cause them considerable concern and they began to distrust many people who were there. They took it upon themselves to speak with their legal counsel about whom they felt were trust-worthy, first going to Thohillodin. She expressed that she had been building an argument in secret regarding safety protocols within the mining guild. When questioned about why this needed to be kept in secrecy, she expressed that there was a high chance that someone in their counsel may let slip information regarding their legal defence, giving the prosecution more time to prepare a counter argument. Satisfied, they began to speculate which of the lawyers would intentionally betray them, unable to arrive at an answer, they decided to follow up with the other at the library.
When they arrived, the room was tense. Tempers were running high and Rohakarth informed them that Erof and Rakroth were arguing over what approach to take regarding their case. Erof believed that they should attempt to de-validate the lack of evidence as that was their strongest piece of evidence to prove innocence, which Rakroth believed that they should bring forth character references and the like as a means to minimise the sentence should they still be found guilty. Rohakarth, as the senior member of counsel, had the final say but offered it to Liaden and Oryim in case they had a direction they would rather go in.
Seeing an opportunity to conduct their own research, the two of them agreed with Rakroth's approach as, not only did this mean they could investigate the guards and mines on their own without their legal team getting in the way but also, should the court proceedings not go their way, they would likely receive a lesser sentence.
With little left to do, the two of them decided to rest and recuperate before staking out Rakroth's daughter, Wilma, as promised. When they arrived back at the Gatehouse, they were greeted with the familiar sounds of Kalydin drinking his sorrow away and Seraph attempting to console him. The three of them caught up over a few drinks before resting and preparing for the stake out. Kalydin, sensing that something was about to go down, decided he would join them for this outing.
So they waited, until the sun started to set and made their way across town to wait for Wilma to emerge from her home. They watched and waited until she emerged, wandering the streets she shuffled between crowds keen to get food from street vendors and escape the wind and rain. Thus our heroes tailed her, following her effortlessly through the crowd thanks to Liaden's keen senses as a hunter.
They eventually arrived at the Crucial Carp, a tavern in The Flats of Fatoris. Wilma stopped outside the door and pulled out a cigarette before a dot of amber light radiated from its end. Just before our heroes were about to approach, another individual emerged from the alleyway adjacent. Too far away to hear, the newcomer and Wilma shared a brief conversation before heading inside, and our heroes stealthily closed in.
