Inverted Hook Item in Kunrai - The Strangling City | World Anvil

Inverted Hook

The fish hook is a common sight on the streets of Kunrai. Fishermen abound in a city surrounded by the sea, and their symbol can be found on shop signs, at the docks, and carved into signposts in every corner of the metropolis. The symbol has even been adopted by several guard units who work against the guilds, as an informal sign of their dedicating to fishing the undesirable elements out of the city's core.   But there is another group who uses the symbol, and their lives depend on being able to identify one another. The Delvers are a loose affiliation of men and women dedicated to the exploration and cataloging of the deep ruins that lie beneath Kunrai. These heroic men and women believe the secret to Kunrai's salvation is hidden in these deadly catacombs. Their single-minded pursuit of this goal has ended in the grisly deaths of many of their members, but it has also earned them fabulous treasures and immense power.   Or so the legends say.   In addition to the prestigious reputation the Delvers have gained, they have also earned the wrath of the nobility and the powerful guilds who seek to control access to the ruins and their mysteries. While most believe Delvers are always ready to flout the law and make a spectacle of themselves, almost no one in Kunrai can reliably claim to have scene a Delver in action. These men and women keep an extraordinarily low profile and go to extreme lengths to keep their identities hidden from their many enemies on both sides of the law.   And yet, the people of Kunrai insist that Delvers can be spotted by the inverted fish hook they wear somewhere on their person. Where this theory came from, and whether it is true, is still a mystery.
