Chirurgeon

"Daddy got a new leg, he lost his in the war   Mommy got a new arm, this one isn't even sore   Uncle Jimmy bought a farm, nothing could be done   Aunt Lila loved her two eyes so she got herself another one"   Chirurgeon, Popular Maecodian children's rhyme

Career

Career Progression

As a regulated profession under the purview of a Tenmaster guild, chirurgeons typically start out as apprentices training under masters. They progress through the typical stages of apprentice, novice, journeyman, expert, and master. Apprentices and novices assist their master, journeymen and experts are often itinerant and visit their masters' contacts to learn from a wider pool of experience, and masters typically settle down and have their own practice. If involved in the Guild, they may aspire to the rank of Grandmaster, though the guild itself has little power over its members.

Payment & Reimbursement

A chirurgeon is typically paid by their patients. In poorer areas, this is typically in the form of livestock or services on a transactional basis, while more affluent areas will likely either have the prospective patients pay a small fee on a weekly or monthly basis. Occasionally, more civic minded Plutarchs will keep a chirurgeon on their payroll to serve the community and fund their living expenses themselves.

Other Benefits

Chirurgeons are a protected class. Harming a chirurgeon is always a crime, and in most places carries a death sentence.
