The massive centre piece of the city of
Illadryia is the Collegiate Arcanum, otherwise known as the Highborn Tower by many of the locals. This is the massive wizard's college that is the centre of all arcane knowledge in all of Kirileth. It's base alone is roughly twelve stories high and is in the shape of a five pointed star. Four points of the star focuses on each of the four elements (fire, water, earth and air) while the one that points to the north deals with both the holy/divine magic like healing etc and the dark forbidden magic like necromancy. While actively practising dark magic is either frowned upon or just outright forbidden, depending on the severity, the knowledge of it is not. As they say it is better to know what you're enemy so you can better understand it's dangers and how to avoid or defend yourself against it. At the pinnacle of the spire sits the Grand Council chambers, housing the 13 mages who not only run the college but the city itself. In fact, the majority of the central spire contains all the offices and the admin of the running of the city rather than anything magical.
The Council of Mages also forms the goverment of
Mymeara itself, of which
Illadryia is the capital. Hence why much of the centre spire is taken up by the various admin and bureaucracy involved in running a country. Despite it's vast size there never seems to be enough space to contain all the offices and work that needed to form a council and a government.
Origin
While the Collegiate Arcanum is vast and spectacular now, it had much more simple origins. It started life as just a simple library which grew and grew until it became the city's main library and a central reserve for all valuable literature. As time went by it started being trusted with more arcane works. Valuable tomes of arcane knowledge were stored in it's secure vaults which in turn attracted more and more mages of all kinds. Thus leading to a simple library becoming the centre of all magical knowledge in Kirileth.
Grand Council
As has been stated above, the
Grand Council Of Mages are also housed at the tip of the central spire. Tasked with not only running the college but the government of the country as well, these top level wizard's are often very busy. Tied up in all manner of bureaucracy and diplomatic discussions as one would expect from those governing a nation. Much to their chagrin as this takes them away from the study of arcane lore they would much rather be involved with but with great power comes great responsibility. These 13 wizened mages each specialise in their own schools of magic, all masters in their own field, some well versed in more than one field. Only two have ever mastered all four of the elemental schools of arcane magic, one being the currently residing Archmage and head of the council. The other is not often talked about, but on the rare occasion they are it is only in cautious whispers. Why this other master of arcane lore is not talked about has been lost to the sands of time.
