Basic Information

Anatomy

Basic Anatomy:

Kobects are bipedal phylum Arthropoda with a slightly cold-blooded nature thanks to their kobold heritage. Their body contains however no ordinary blood, but a greenish substance called Hemolyth, which acts like blood but allows the kobect to breathe with their whole body. The kobold half of this hybrid blood allows however normal breathing as well if desired. That is however not the only boon of their green blood, but the hydrostatic pressure of it allows kobects to jump very high and perform incredible feats of strength.


No matter the generation their trait of having four arms and therefore six limbs is always present. Being a creation and servant to the four-armed goddess Notitia, she saw it as more than fitting to grant her lifelong subordinates a boon of her eternal beauty.


Arms and legs are stout and sturdy, encased in its majority in hard but lightweight chitin. They do possess therefore not only an exoskeleton but at a few points in their body still remains of the kobold internal skeleton, visible especially on their inner thighs and upper back, that are covered in soft scales instead of chitin, providing additional manoeuvrability.


Their body is segmented into three clearly divided main parts: thorax, pelvis and abdomen. These parts are connected with thin darker shaded scaled petioles, which are containing no organs but act as remains of the kobold's spine and are integral for the nervous system only. No organ system reaches across more than one segment with exception of the digestive system.


Kobects have also a fully flat appearing tail they can inflate at will to appear bigger and more intimidating or to impress others.

Eyes:

Kobects possess the eyes of an insectoid, large faceted eyes able to see in a 320° arc with the view to the back only in black and white. Having no pupils is it impossible to track on what they focus, but their genetically enhanced brain allows for a focus on everything at the same time without huge issues. The eyes are covered with a slimy film keeping them protected as kobects fully lack the ability to blink.

Maw:

Their maw is usually in its entirely hidden behind plated chitin and only rarely is seen open either when they eat or trust their surroundings to relax and show the many sharp mandibles hidden behind the plates.

Tongue:

A kobect's tongue appears as a hollow, meaty and wirelike lobe. One that can stretch out up to 40cm while getting thinner the more it stretches.
From 20cm onwards is the kobect able to suck fluids through their tongue like a butterfly. This hybrid lobe allows the kobect to consume solids as well as fluids without many issues.

Genetics and Reproduction

"These still remaining kobold genes are a necessary evil.
I can't fully remove it without rendering my creation to be unable to reproduce with each other and only with our experiments.
I have to keep the kobold genetics preserved, but clearly separated allowing for perfect results in the evolution experiments."

To be able to create a new species, called Insectoids, out of ordinary insects needed Notitia a carrier species to achive the impossible.


Using the genetical makeover of kobolds had she manually forced the barely sentient Insects to evolve integrating more and more kobold genes as Phase 1 went on. When eventually the results of a purely asexual evolution in the laboratory came to stagnation saw the goddess herself forced to envision a carrier to move onwards to a sexual evolution from sentience to sapience starting Phase 2.


Using kobold volunteers, who were trying to make a quick buck via helping out Noctec's research efforts, she entranced her scaled followers to give their body for science. Integrating primal insectoid DNA into their makeover she created in 4002 the first Broodmothers that will soon carry out the first generation of a crossbreed species she dubbed "Kobect".


Over the following generations has Notitia with continuous genetic makeovers assured that the insectoid and kobold half are as clearly divided as it was possible. Their insectoid half keeps dominance to maintain compability with project 'Chitin' to the culminating finish. But their kobold half remains crucial to maintain the small Kobect population in Noctec's laboratories. Being now part of a secret project have many generations of Kobects never seen life beyond the laboratory tailored for top-secret projects.


It is known that Kobects are compatible with both their respective halfs, but due to the isolative conditions in which this subspecies prospers is it not known if they are compatible with other cold-blooded species or even Humans, but that might change when the century project comes finally to a finish in 4999.

Ecology and Habitats

The outside world appeared perfect, unchanging. Every day was like the last. There were no seasons in the area around the secret laboratory, not that its dutiful scientists even knew what a season was supposed to be. Project chitin was so top secret, that the laboratory existed under a holographic mountain, not on any map on Prius. An enclosed paradise of Insectoid evolution.

With the singular goal to appease their goddess and maker to bring forth progress, A new generation, maybe able to walk upright or even speak? A kobect can dream, even if sleep was a concept they had no concept of. The outside world was perfect, as perfect as the whole situation was wrong. But the kobect wouldn't know.

Sensory Capabilites

Kobects are made to be always attentive.
Their facet eyes are big and unblinking, forced to stay attentive at all times, supported by their modified brain to process such a flood of emotions.
Their antennas are responsive to even slight vibrations, beginning to vibrate at even a whisper.


A blessing that is an even bigger curse. Their insectoid physique has stolen their ability to sleep. Kobects see themselves forced to manually remove their sensory capabilities by restraining their antennas and covering their eyes to fall into a resting stasis to at least pretend to sleep.

Cloning

Despite her millennia of experience on all subjects matter the goddess of science and leader of Noctec still has issues with estimating the true worth of morals, a soft and compassionate heart and subjective passion. It was that the breeder kobect Nictan had achieved exactly that in his years in her servitude, forging a bond to the insectoid experiments, longing to save some of the failed evolutions from their fate to become the fertile ground to grow the next generation.
Nictan took some of the experiments in as 'part of his family, those he resonated with on a different, emotional level.


When Nictan died in 4989 did Notitia do the thing every sane scientist would do to such an excellent subordinate.
...
Desecrate his ashes and clone him multiple times to continue his legacy.
But Nictan V2.1 to V2.9 were all failures in her eyes, having reverted to the emotionless and moralless servants of hers. ... only V2.2 acted odd and began questioning his entire existence upon meeting one of Nictan V1's children and getting taught by her the original's discoveries.

Notitia

A kobold is only then unusually smart when they have their mind and body at satifactory ease. A brief state of unparrallel wit rivalling even the smartest minds. But so fleeting, so primal, so crippling. Notitia noticed that quite quickly and began to rewire her 'children', replace unfavorable triggers with better ones, causing the brain of her creations to get primed by actually for research projects useful triggers. The crave for knowledge, the curiosity of science. Triggers that actually benefit Noctec's scientific advances. It was a long process across a few generations with quite a few nearly braindead miscreants but after perfecting her formula she brought forth the eprfect lab assistants. Eager to learn and even more eager to serve her cause.


Childhood:
Deeming the process of growing up unnecessary and a childhood wasted in the eyes of progress Notitia developed a special growing chamber in which a fresh born Kobect grows and absorbs knowledge. In a meager year does the young kobect runs through the first 16 years of their life and gets fed with the academic knowledge to best university absolvents in their own game. They however fully lack any morals, social skills or emotional aptitude being creations of science for science, bred to serve in the evolution program as gene carrier.
