Maria Alexandrovna
Queen
Maria Alexnadrovna was a Russian Grand Duchess, being the daughter of Alexander Romanov, as well as Queen of Canada as the wife of Alfred I. While she was recieved warmly by the Canadian people, she viewed them as cold. She quickly gained a reputation of a haughty personality.
After the death of her grandfather, Nicholas I of Russia, she fled to Kiev with her family. She accompanied her brother, Alexander Alexandrovich, to visit relatives in Hesse by Rhine. There, she met Alfred, who was visiting his sister, the Duchess of Hesse by Rhine.
During the Ukrainian War, Maria pressured her husband to recognize the independence of Ukraine, with her brother as Tsar.
The death and suspected suicide of her son, Alfred, affected her greatly. During the question of succession, she pressed the claims of her daughters so as not to lose her own standing if one of them were to become queen. Her second daughter, Victoria, was eventually accepted as heir.
During the Great War, Maria pressured Beatrice to support George V of Britain and Nicholas I of Ukraine. Beatrice did so, but Maria died before the end of the war to see the defeat of Canada.
