John Quincy Adams

John Quincy Adams, 2nd Duke of Massachusetts, was an American politician who served as the eighth Chancellor of America from 1826 - 1834. Son of Chancellor John Adams, he also served as Premier of the Senate under Chancellor Rufus King. During his tenure as Chancellor, he introduced legislation to end the institution of slavery, though it was immediately stopped by the Supreme Court.

Among the most consequential acts as Chancellor was his intervention in the tensions between Georgia and the Five Tribes. Although Adams was adamant about maintaining the sovereignty of the Tribes, he felt his hands were tied in the matter. During the standoff, he convinced King Augustus II to enter into negotiations. The Tribes were given the territory of West Florida, and most of the citizens of the Tribes accepted reimbursements to settle. This land was to be designated as the territory of Sequoyah.
