  Structure:
Each hold is headed by a dominant family, ruled by the Az Thrumm, or High Lord.  He is served by a bevy of ministers serving on the Nozkron Thelor, or Council of Advisors.
The Az Thrumm is served by a number of allied families, the Banrumm or Bannerlords.
The Az Thrumm, Nozkron and Banrumm form the core of a given hold, and the majority of the hold is their settlement, usually a massive hold carved from a mountain over generations.  It is the highest and most majestic peak in the range, and deep inside is the kings hall.  Decorations vary, and one hold has illusions of the land beyond cast upon the walls to give the illusion of space in depths of stone.
Lesser holds for each of the families of the Banrumm are scattered throughout the holdings of the Hold's Kingdom, and some lesser members of the Ruling Clan will have outposts as well.
None match the Splendor or scale of the seat of the Az Thrumm.  Many act as trading posts for the Aermite merchants, and as watch citadels for the Hold militias who patrol the surface, barrows and mines of their territory.

The families of the advisory council are interlinked by treaty to preserve a unified face in matters across the dwarven race, though each hold is free to implement their own version of the decrees.  Indeed, travel amongst the holds is encouraged, such as the Dwarven journeymen travelling amongst the holds to learn as much as possible before returning to their home hold on their Master's Hajj, a pilgrimage to bring their hard earned lore back home, there to share with their next generation coming behind.
