Strategic Defense Programme
A massive network of orbital, seaborne, airborne and stationary assets, all brought to existence in order to fulfill one mission - protect UAP from nuclear attack.
Signed in life alongside Constellation, the Strategic Defense Programme was off to a rocky start from get-go.
Not only due to opposition to militarization of space, but also due to immaturity of the technologies, required for it.
However, over time, as Constellation's cradle started taking shape, so did the SDP.
The first major noticeable asset, deployed in space, was the Alpha Star chemical laser satellite - nothing more than a prototype. However, the mission it performed might've been the most important one in the entire history of the system - the first and only firing test, that depleted laser's reactant reserves, had it deorbit some pieces of space debris by ablating them with its beam, allowing President to capitalize on it and proclaim, that SDP is not just UAP's shield, but also a tool of peace and international cooperation, as the less space debris is in orbit, the more accessible space would be for everyone.
From then on, the opposition was slowly dying down, as more and more pieces of Constellation were deployed and brought to life - and with them, so were the pieces of SDP.
The second notable laser test happened from Gaia-6 Ground Laser Facility, firing at a reflector satellites that bounce and refocused its beam to engage targets outside of what it could cover by itself - and, given the massive amounts of power this facility could call upon, as well as much greater cooling, the beam could still reach space with enough power to ablate trash and deorbit it… or carve through a thick ablative shield of incoming warhead.
As the system grew, the laser tests became more and more of a regular occurrence, to the point that Nellis City had, for the first time in decades, blacked out the lights during the night, allowing better views on the lightshow in the skies.
Aside from the UPSMF base in the mountains, the Strategic Defense Programme had another base it could be controlled from - the Gunslinger Space Station, operated by UAP. In many ways, it can be said that this station was the salvation of the entire system, for when Muscovia collapsed, the SDP was thought of as obsolete and relic that was no longer needed.
Thankfully, enough evidence was present that the lasersats, "Stinger" railgun sats and "Black Star" neutral beam sats were also useful for science purposes and could, with some limitations, be rented out for customers for experimentation purposes.
Meanwhile, the Gunslinger Space Station, de-facto, became the Free World's Space Station, hosting astronauts from many of UAP-friendly countries, also saving itself from retirement this way.
And nowadays, when threats ever more esoteric rear their heads, the SDP is brought back online from its slumber, along with its last major upgrade - the OKIR network.
