The Kandarin Banks are a network of banking services owned and operated by the dwarven
Clan Kandarin. They are well-known for security and reliability and can be found in larger cities and important trading hubs.
Services
Kandarin Banking offer a number of core services, all of them related to protecting and providing access to goods and wealth.
Lockbox services
Each location of a Kandarin Bank offers lockboxes that can be rented for a monthly fee. The client receives a key that provides access to the lockbox and at additional cost, multiple such keys can be provided. The cost of renting a lockbox depends on its security: the Kandarin Bank in
Prydisyrr, for example, offers lockboxes at the base of the
Temple Tree for relatively low cost, while renting them deeper in the bank comes at a premium. The protection offered by using lockboxes in the well-guarded depths of the
Lloridan Kandarin Vault is even more expensive. Similarly, larger lockboxes are more expensive than smaller lockboxes.
Some locations also provide access to extradimensional storage space. This option, which is only affordable for the wealthiest of clients, allows one to store physical goods in one particular bank and then to retrieve those goods via storage in a wholly different bank. It is also possible to have one-way access installed at home.
Wudu Wasusu, for example, can add items to his extradimensional storage from the comfort of his home, although he can only retrieve them by visiting an appropriate Kandarin Bank.
Deposits and withdrawal
Kandarin Bank clients can also open an account for the safe storage of money. Each deposit and withdrawal to such an account is carefully administered. Maintaining an account costs 1 silver piece per month. At the additional cost of 5 silver pieces per month, clients can decide to have their account balance shared with all other Kandarin Banks. For those clients, their account information is shared with other bank locations using couriers from
Running Boulder. These couriers rotate between a number of fixed locations to ensure that all locations are quickly updated about changes to the balance of an account.
Getting access to accounts requires bringing a key that is authenticated in the bank, as well as a matching passphrase.
Financing
Kandarin Banks also provide financing to commercial parties. This can take the form of lending money with interest rates or of the bank setting up and purchasing shares in a company.
Trading shares
Although their volume is limited compared to the stock market of the
Imperial Trading Company, the Kandarin Banks do facilitate buying and selling certified shares of a company, as long as the shares were set up by the bank itself (so that authenticity can be ascertained more easily). Some wealthy clients even hire bank staff to buy and sell shares for them.
