Ontaz (ON-taz)

President of the Vincaran Federation Gea'Artonani Ontaz Levtor

Ontaz Levtor was one of the main agitators in the period leading up to the Great Civil War. It was widely speculated--but never proven--that he was the mastermind behind the assassination of Emperor Xeebon.   Ontaz is both an expert on ancient Vincaran culture and history, and a brilliant politican.   After the Battle of Miantar, he was chosen as the first president of the Vincaran Federation. His first official act was to sign the Treaty of Jantrala with Emperor Xeres.   As the Vincaran Federation does not have term limits, Ontaz has been reelected every five years by a comfortable margin, and remains popular with the people. His shrewd political mind has kept both Xeres and Vazali on their toes through the years.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

In his twilight years, Ontaz has had a number of small strokes that have made him more impulsive, forgetful, and irritable.

Mental characteristics

Sexuality

Ontaz is attracted to men, but has remained closeted his entire life due to Vincaran culture's homophobia. He has had some secret romances through the years, but none that lasted or qualified as true love.   The only person who knew about his homosexuality was his wife, Meriza. She was aromantic and asexual, and they chose to get married so neither of them would be forced to wed someone they weren't attracted to. Aside from conceiving their son, their relationship was strictly platonic.

Education

Ontaz has a bachelor's degree in political science and a master's degree in Vancorran studies.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Along with Commander Xarax, Ontaz is considered the founding father of the Vincaran Federation.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

As a small child in Ozazo, Ontaz looked up at the ancient temples of his ancestors and wanted to know why his people no longer built such grand structures, and why Lanarians controlled their homeland. As he grew and learned about the history of Vancorra and its conquest, he vowed to find a way for Vincarans to have their independence again.

Social

Family Ties

Ontaz was widowed in 4228 when his wife of 35 years, Meriza, passed away. They had one child, Nartok.

History

Ontaz and Xarax were close friends who shared a vision of a world where Vincarans could have their own country again without stifling under imperial rule. Ontaz's political acumen, knowledge of history, and skill as an orator combined with Xarax's fervor and military expertise to form an unstoppable team.   Ontaz's levelheaded attitude contrasted with Xarax's hotheadedness, but they rarely argued. Both were utterly dedicated to their mission and wanted a better future for their people, especially their own children.   Together they sparked the Great Civil War and are considered the founding fathers of the Vincaran Federation, even if Xarax didn't live to see the nation's birth.

History

Meriza was unmarried well into her 30s, which was unusual and stigmatized in Vincaran culture. Under pressure from her parents to find a husband, she turned to her longtime friend, Ontaz. He had confided in her that he was gay and also dreading the necessity of marrying to keep up his reputation. They decided to wed, have one child for the sake of appearances and familial obligations (and because they both liked the idea of parenthood), and then live happily, platonically ever after. She supported the relationships he discreetly had with other men through the years, even though he never found lasting romance. They were close friends and devoted co-parents.   Ontaz and Meriza remained married for 35 years, until her death of natural causes at age 71. No one, not even their son, knew the true nature of their relationship.

History

Ontaz is proud of his son and pleased to see him following in his footsteps. Nartok has great respect for his father and seeks his approval, although he also wishes to make a name for himself on his own merits without always being thought of as "Ontaz's son." Ontaz understands this and encourages his offspring's ambitions.

History

Ontaz badly misjudged Xeres at first, assuming the physically frail crown prince would be a weak leader. He quickly learned otherwise after Xeres's ascention to the throne, and grew to grudgingly respect the young emperor. His opinion further softened through the years, and after Xeres' death Ontaz even called him "a great man" when offering condolences to Empress Vazali.   Xeres sympathized with the Vincarans' desire for independence up to a point, but he could never forget that his father, Xeebon, had most likely been assassinated on Ontaz's orders. Xeres treated Ontaz with the respect due to a fellow national leader while negotiating the Treaty of Jantrala, but kept personal conversations to a minimum.   A private phone line connected their offices after the Great Civil War in hopes of diffusing future conflicts. It was rarely used, but carried some tense conversations during the Waznat Crisis and the standoff at Erdiza.
