Kaun

Kaun

Kaun, used to be the Lighthouse to the capital, Tyro , but the light of the mage-powered tower went out in a surge of energy and series of explosions, leaving Kaun as a grimy, semi-industrial dilapidated city-sphere, considered useless by most in the capital . Inter-sphere Travel is limited to Tyro , only available to the rich who rarely wish to come to Kaun, cargo haulers and the gang-run black market trips. As such Kaun is a city-sphere sub-par to the capital, home to suburbs full of suspicion, defensiveness, traders trying to keep themselves afloat, still rebuilding after the Lighthouse explosions.

The Lighthouse: No Longer

The Lighthouse used to hold the key purpose of Kaun, signposting the location of the city-sphere capital Tyro to travelling traders. Since its explosion due to ‘irresponsible spellcasters , Kaun has struggled economically and socially, particularly in the shadow of the capital.

Demographics

Take humanoids as the norm, but let there be overlap with other fantasy species, so that ‘human’ is a vague term in a city of humanoids with inherited gills, elongated fingers, cat-like eyes. The term 'human' still applies, but genetic mixing has meant about 1 in 5 of Kaun's citizens will have a visible variation to your 'default' human. Anti-magic conspiracy theorists blame magic corrupting genes to create these 'mutations', and pockets of 'purist humans' who only couple with 'pure and original' humans do exist, but they are generally considered to be closed-minded and frankly, rudely unrealistic.

Government

An elected pool of ambassadors and department heads, some from Kaun, some from Tyro, a little too separated from the real world by the curse of bureaucracy perhaps. Many governmental bodies are quite the hive of suspicion after it was found that wizards had been using magic to 'influence decisions in their favour' at practically every level.  Law of the City-Sphere Kaun

Infrastructure

Life in Kaun

The streets of Kaun vary from grimy soot-filled brick slums to well-scrubbed apartments of affluence near sites of commercial significance near the cleaner trade ports.   The main trade source is: copper refining, use for many structures in the capital, followed by the trade of political and commercial Favours, scribework of histories, research and favours, and black market Cosmetic Enhancements .   Crime is common in many of the suburbs of Kaun, the police teams being strained with dealing with illicit spellcasting. (The police are generally severe, indiscreet and unforgiving.) Magic Misusers are heavily prosecuted after an incident the previous year in which a spellcaster exploded a housing block, heavily undermining any arguments for the lifting of the severe laws around spellcasting.   Magic and technology are understood to be codependent, which creates problems for Kaun trying to keep up with magi-tech progress while having severe laws on magic. Magic is not completely forbidden, but so many forms of magic are illegal that it is very difficult to practice without crossing lines. (Think cannabis legislation in the uk)   The city-sphere is often seen to have three layers, a network of streets, a layer of rooftops above and a labyrinth of sewers feeding in and out of the rivers.

Leisure

There are many recreational pursuits the citizens of Kaun partake in when not working the daily toil. Some like watching the Lawyer Firm Battles , some partake in artificial substances, some delve into libraries.
