The Inquisition

Formed by several high ranking officials in the Imperial Dominion of Spayle's military who were quick studies in the arts of the Chicane, The Inquisition's sole purpose is to hunt down Chicane users that use their power for evil. The Inquisition is known for being a peace-keeping organization, sending their agents to track down and apprehend or neutralize those who misuse the Chicane.

Structure

perhapsGaion   Higher ranking White Cloaks, those who have a better understanding of the Chicane and how it works in the world are known as "Rooks". These men and women wear the Plague Masks and have a strong command of the Chicane as well as usually travel with several White Cloaks under them. It is the duty of Rooks to seek out special cases - mainly those who have defected or eluded the Inquisition before. These agents are cunning, powerful, and have a reputation for getting the job done. They are very good at gathering information others could not and are used to extract such information by their superiors.   Higher still than The Rooks are a group of highly skilled students of the Chicane itself. These "Professors" are ruthless in their quest for knowledge. It is their job to understand the Chicane in its entirety, how it manifests in mankind, and how better to use strange powers that spring forward from those chosen by it. The Professors of Dreynor Academy are just as much teachers as they are students. Their quest for knowledge leads them to send the White Cloaks and Rooks on missions to find more Chicane users to train in the arts already understood by them. Their work in this way helps fuel the political agenda of the Inquisition: to prepare the Dominion for a higher form of warfare.   The highest ranking members of the Inquisition report directly to the Imperial Senate and the Emperor himself. It is a select few trusted men of the Emperor's that organize the Inquisition's efforts and dispatch White Cloaks and Rooks as needed to deal with threats to The Imperial Dominion of Spayle. These men and women are known as "The Cause", and their identity is known only by a few to maintain plausible deniability by the Senate.

Culture

Most of those that make up the ranks of The Inquisition are True Believers. Singular focused and incredibly stoic, these members project a sense of fear and dominance. Members must believe so strongly that the Chicane must be tamed that they can think of nothing else when the mission comes.    Each member must become a living weapon, for they believe their enemy will not allow them a second chance. Its for that reason they can be found with various tools strapped to their garments. They also utilize plague masks in order to protect their eyesight and breathing. These uniforms are sacred to them, and they maintain their upkeep religiously.   They choose the color white to signify their cleansing of the land of evil.
  • White Cloaks are typically given the job of coercion, tracking, and detaining possible threats. This usually makes them a bit more charismatic and connected to the commoner.
  • Rooks typically are quiet, focused, and inquisitive. They see and seek out what White Cloaks cannot. This makes them much more feared than their White Cloak cousins and it allows them a lot of freedom when conducting their investigations.
  • Professors are typically academically-minded, as you would expect, however their command of the Chicane has become so focused that they can safely instruct others to do so. This makes them well-respected and even feared by those who do not understand their power.

Public Agenda

"Cleansing" is what members of The Inquisition call their work. While this may seem creepy to some, most agree that without The Inquisition to keep Chicane users in check, Kaldra would be a much more dangerous place.   Known across the Empire for their work, The Inquisition spares no expense in educating people of the dangers of Chicane users if left unchecked. Some may call this "propaganda", but nearly every settlement still keeps a watchful eye out for Chicane users, in order to report them to The Inquisition.    After The Inquisition apprehends them, these "problematic Chicane users" are taught to harness their powers, to better control them, and how to handle to influx of new power. This is fairly common knowledge throughout the Dominion, but those who have had family and friends taken from them by the Inquisition never see their loved ones again. In certain areas controlled by the Dominion, rumors have begun to spread: that they torture and enslave them, that they're building a massive army of Chicane users, that those who have the Chicane eventually go insane and have to be killed...    Officially, The Inquisition denies such claims, but they also withhold reuniting families with ones trained by them so without any proof, no one really knows exactly what happens to them.

History

Known only to "The Cause" and to those they deem it necessary, the Inquisition was formed from members of the long extinct Order of Klyn, and some of the same culture is used in their decision-making.
