Overthrow of the dragon rule Military Conflict in Kaitstud | World Anvil

Overthrow of the dragon rule

The Dragons were gifted Kaitstud by the Great Squirrel, and granted humans to work the land and serve them. But the relationship between the two groups wasn't as beneficial as many desired it to be. Things came to a head when the humans turned against their dragon overlords, slaughtering them all and forming the shifter clans.

Events leading up to the attacks

As the human population of Kaitstud multiplied, they felt more and more removed from the dragons who ruled. This came to a head after Queen Soovi's brother rampaged across the land in his madness. Though she took responsibility for her brother's actions and actively worked to stop him, it was felt to be too little and too late.   When Soovi asked the humans for help to neutralise the threat caused by her brother, she inadvertantly gave them the secret to the dragon's powers. Without dragongrass the dragons were unable to keep their attackers at bay. With enough fighters, a dragon could be overpowered and killed, though only at a great cost of human lives.   Once her brother had been killed, Soovi returned to the dragon valley to grieve. Unbeknownst to her, the humans weren't happy with their treatment. With the knowledge of their reliance on dragongrass in combat, they plotted to overthrow her.

Zao's role

Zao, who had been spurned by Loviise, incited the masses to mutiny. He led the fighters from the front, working to separate the dragons from each other so they were vulnerable alone. Picking them off one by one gave the fighters a chance to regroup inbetween each skirmish.   He led from the front, always in the thick of the fighting. Soon Soovi and two of her three sons were killed, and the younger dragons retreated into the mountains.

Hunting the remaining dragons

Zao led many hunting parties into the mountains, to find the remaining dragons, but none were successful. The peaks too high, the footing too treacherous, and the sightings too few to give them any clue where to find them.   In the end it was Loviise's desire to reproduce and reform the dragon race which betrayed them a second time. She ventured out of the mountains to find a mate, where she was followed. Zao tracked her back to her lair, where he waited for her eggs to hatch. Once that happened, he slaughtered them, their mother, and Mikkli, Varvaara's brother-guard who was there in case anything went wrong.

Rise of the shifters

In the ashes of their overthrow, Zao used the four dragon hearts to form four shifter clans. Granting these powers to himself and his army in honour of their steadfastness following him in the face of all the losses they'd suffered. At the celebratory feast after the battle was over, he shared a goblet with them all which contained an elixir based on the dragon hearts. As each of his regiments were named after creatures found in Kaitstud, and their uniform included a section of their fur, those were the four creatures the soldiers became able to shift into.

The repurcussions

Unbeknownst to Zao, one dragon remained. Varvaara hardly ever left the valley where they lived, and so she remained there, hiding, until the day came when her drive to reproduce grew too strong to ignore anymore. Her continued maintenance of the Golden Tree supported Kaitstud and ensured that the power continued to flow through the land.
