Company of Merchant Adventurers of Troyso
The Company of Merchant Adventurers of Troyso is authorized by the King to manage exporting for Troyso, especially staples of Brittlecairn wool, one of Troyso's most cherished textiles. They handle all transactions involving the export of wool, and trade for valuable imports, which they resell. The Company has the right to levy fines against anyone they find attempting to export their wool without going through the merchant guild.
The main headquarters are based in Whitich, the best place to catch folks smuggling wool through the pass without paying what is due to the Company, but they have warehouses in all the major cities in Troyso, especially Arnistino, where wool is exported by ship. They make their money from exorbitant markups on products, trading for much sought-after imports, and charging for storage space in their warehouses.
The Company has recently begun attempting to branch out, gain control over more local exports and earn a greater profit. For Brittlecairn wool becomes available only at shearing time, leading to difficulties in cash flow for the guild. They have sent diplomats to the King's Court, hoping to negotiate more lucrative contracts on export, perhaps mithral ore, but nothing has come of it yet. For now, the Merchant Adventurers will have to be satisfied with wool prices.
There have been more than a few complaints from shepherds out of the Brittlecairn, Blackwick and Whitscar Counties, where most of the Brittlecairn flocks are raised, claiming they are losing much needed gold in the way of fines and warehousing. There has even been rumors of forming a rival Merchant Company to break the monopoly. If so, they will need a powerful influence in court to do it. Appealing to the King's Brittlecairn heritage will not be enough to sway him. For now, the Company of Merchant Adventurers holds its monopoly.
