Tower Cor Charlot

Sir Tower Cornelis Charlot (a.k.a. The Juggerknight)

Before you even read further into the book, if you go to Jeslore without knowing who Tower Charlot is, expect very weird stares and possibly offended scoffs. In short, a long time ago 6 heroes set out to stop the plans of an immensely powerful evil creature and only 1 returned, and it wasn't Tower. These heroes were called the Immortals, and although he's modest about it and shares credit, he was their leading voice. He's the source of many cultural aspects such as stand up comedy and like other notable figures from history, the most popular secular religion worships him as 'the guide of the stalwart' and in modern culture he serves as something equivalent to a patron saint, symbolizing strength and resilience, particularly in defense of something or someone.
— Hitchhiker's guide to Jeslore

"They say that he stood in front of a fire breathing dragon with his shield raised to protect a child and came out without even a scratch." -
— Excerpt from a history book.

"Eyewitnesses report that at after the police raid on Xeracom plox there was indeed a man wearing armor looking much like that of historical figure Tower Charlot. There is very little information but we have overheard that all of this was part of a malicious plan to revive the immortals only to reprogram their minds into a state of permanent hostility that, through the actions of a police officer whose name we not yet have has been foiled."
— - A scene from the colonial news network, investigating a xeracom lab raid.

"An odd man. I have been doing this domestic security and civil protection job for over 10 years now and never have I come across a man that is seemingly exclusively driven by his odd sense of humor, that only he finds funny I might add. In fact, he reached out to me with the request to use a very specific image as the 'cover photo' of this report. Additionally, there is an odd disparity between his general in person demeanour, and his personality when he's writing in his diary. He also has an odd habit of referring to himself as a clown, a great disservice to his past of heroism. Perhaps I'm simply not equipped with the proper comedy receptors to understand but I genuinely find his comedy hard to follow, as it appears to me that he genuinely enjoys pretending to be stupid, perhaps as a way to get opponents to underestimate him."
— - J4k08's report on Tower adjusting to life after his revival.

Divine Domains

Tower is the guide of the stalwart, like in life he would often blatantly stand between his friends and danger. He was well known for risking his own well being for the safety of those he cared about. For this reason Tower, in Guardian's faith, is symbolized as an elephant and is usually referred to as "the protector". He is obviously not worshipped like a deity because that's not how guardian's faith works, additionally it would be extra strange as Tower himself was an outspoken nihilist.   The Protector in guardian's faith is the guide that's typically popular among soldiers, particularly the defensive variety as Tower was the one embodying the idea that to truly protect others one must endanger themselves. Perhaps not unsurprisingly he is also quite popular among performers, as his followers tend to find the necessary courage they need in his philosophy of self sacrifice and nihilism. The jist of his philosophy is that everyone, even the races that don't die of old age will one day meet their end whether they like it or not. He says that life is not a story. Life is a performance and it's up to you to give a good show. Among other things his philosophy rests on the idea that to life live to its fullest, it's best to imagine you have a loyal audience watching you and everything you do, including your very dying is done for them.   In layman's terms, Tower's philosophy heavily relies on the fact that no matter what, one will always have people looking up to them or caring for them. Family, friends, co-workers are your proverbial audience and they are both a part of your show but also watching it. In a world so dark, Tower took it upon himself to not only defend his loved ones from physical harm, but by constantly making jokes he also wanted to shield them from the grim reality of tough situations he was in. And if his ultimate punchline was to give his life so that people could remain happy, then he gladly did. That is why he earned the title of protector.   His philosophy of jokes and making light of a grim situation alongside the idea that you live life for others gives a lot of people in Jeslore the strength to make the most of a bad situation, be they soldiers about to charge into the enemy's keel, comedians struck with stagefright or students stuck in a dark place.

Artifacts

Like with the other guides, Tower has his "artifacts" on display in the Apex-122 historical museum. His armor, sword and shield are kept in immensely high value.

Holy Books & Codes

Tower himself only wrote one book: Tower's battle diary. His diary speaks on his adventures but also some very personal things such as his friendship with Sylvia and Blaze but also him coming to terms with having children and more. Sprinkled throughout the book are awful puns and dad jokes he wrote down as well as combat techniques.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

To properly control his armor, Tower already needed to be in sound physical shape but he went above and beyond by striving for an athletic body type. He's already really tough without his armor but inside of it he's close to invincible. Additionally, Tower has great stamina and can run in armor for about 20 minutes without getting winded. Of course, he could be making all of this up as no one has ever seen his real body because ne never takes his armor off, but he's not known to be a liar.

Identifying Characteristics

Aside from his armor, Tower's most obvious identifying feature is his height, with armor and all he is well over 2 meters tall. Another thing he is known for is the way he carries himself. His helmet visors change shape to cartoonishly reflect his mood, and they indicate he's almost always cheerful and pleased. This is further illustrated by his gait and posture. When standing still he always has his chest thrust forward and his fists in his side. When he walks he typically does so with an almost exaggerated gait.

Mental characteristics

Personal history

The beginning of Tower's story is as stereotypical as it is apt. He and his brother were left in a basket on the doorstep of an orphanage and they were both raised there until the age of about 12. Both Tower and his brother Magnus were adopted by an elderly couple in a small village north of Lionslair named Dimfrost where he spent much of his childhood. Despite his stature, Tower was a very sensitive child and relied heavily on the support his immensely religious brother gave him. Unsurprisingly, when at the age of 15 his brother abandoned him to pursue a zealous lifestyle in the mountains of Frostspike, he was devastated and his opinion on not only his brother but on the whole of religion soured. He always had a knack for wordplay but unfortunately he grew up in an era where comedy was yet to be a common means of entertainment, so with only his stature as an advantage he signed up as a townsguard in Dimfrost.   During his service, the war for Dracholm broke out and he was drafted into the newly founded Dracholmian Expeditionary Force in a platoon full of levies. This is where he met who would one day be his best friend: Blaze Crimson. The outfit was slaughtered with only a few survivors: Tower, Blaze, Klaut, and Viktor. With nowhere else to go, they all marched on Spectre's stronghold and against all odds defeated and subsequently arrested her. His first act of heroism, but with many to come. Tower and his friends, having not only survived one of the deadliest wars but also arresting the one responsible for it were knighted into 'The Immortals'.    He was allowed to choose Spectre's faith, and stated that killing her would be too easy. The only way she could repay Dracholm for her crimes is by staying alive and joining the immortals. He also likely noticed that Spectre's magical mastery was unmatched and that killing her would be wasteful, especially when he believed she was willing to attone for her crimes.   Tower's life remained fairly eventful following his first heroic act, leading all the way until his death several years later. His heroic final act where he gave his own life to protect Jeslore from Zartor.

Gender Identity

Although he is clearly a biological male and doesn't necessarily correct anyone when they refer to him with male pronouns, he generally doesn't seem to conform to traditional gender identities. When asked what his gender is he typically responds with "I'm a clown" and then doesn't elaborate further. He generally doesn't seem comfortable being put in one box and likes to be seen as a construct, or 'meme factory'. He also consistently outright refuses to show his real face or even come out of his armor. In short Tower simply doesn't like being labelled, and does everything in his power to avoid being categorized, be it in terms of gender, race, or nationality.

Sexuality

Tower hasn't publicly made any comments on his sexuality but he has only ever dated women. Oddly enough, Tower does not seem like the romantic type unless he is prompted. He'll take his wife to the movies and restaurants to make her happy but otherwise treats her more like a close friend. That's not to say he isn't in love with her, Tower's definition of love just seems less based on attraction and more on a personal connection.

Education

Tower is generally uneducated aside from very basic combat training as part of him becoming a village guard. Most of his skills are intrinsic. He was always good at making use of armor, and rapidly adapting to battlefield situations. He's also a quick thinker, being fast to come up with wordplay for the sake of timing his puns to be even more inappropriate and unfunny. After his revival, this pattern continued and he showed little to no interest in getting a higher degree, instead pursuing a career as a TV host (still in armor) and signing up with the armed forces as an advantage pusher. Aside from quick training on how to use modern power armor and technology, Tower is still mostly uneducated.

Employment

Tower is not a person with a very interesting employment record. His first job was as a town guard and later he was drafted to fight a war. After becoming an immortal he generally just stuck to trying to lead the immortals when they needed him and was something of a travelling law enforcer as his dayjob. He was essentially paid to roam Linnesse and help out wherever he could while at the same time making the life of everyone miserable with his sense of humor.   Following his revival and subsequent adjustment to modern life, Tower with his taste for humor and attention pursued a career in TV entertainment. He worked in sports commentary and also hosted a TV show while serving as an advantage pusher in the armed forces on the side. He also remained politically active, very much railing against authoritarianism in his own abstractly comedic way.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Over his life, Tower can boast that he has the highest kill count when it comes to dragons. Even after his death, no one could beat his record of 67 Kenshin dragons, 37 Leonidas class dragons, 27 Fawkes class dragons, 15 Artagnan class dragons and 3 Lancelot class dragons.   His biggest accomplishment, what cost him his life was ending the reign of the evil king Zartor, an evil entity that sought to colonize this dimension and exterminate Jeslorian life. He went into history as the guide of stalwart becoming an example of reliability and valor, especially for those you care about even in the face of death. He also ended one of the deadliest wars quickly by throwing himself at Spectre and somehow winning.

Failures & Embarrassments

As written in his diary, towards the end of his fatal mission Tower began to really blame himself for letting his friends die, stating that in the end, he was in charge and that no matter what, he was going to make this right. He also has very mixed feelings about recruiting Spectre considering her immensely authoritarian views.   He also regrets forcing his son to grow up alone, who would grow up to become an utterly toxic person in spite of being put in charge of the immortals.

Mental Trauma

On the surface, there doesn't seem to be anything out of the ordinary with Tower aside from the fact that he is a very complicated person. Among other things he outright refuses to ever take his armor off. He says this is because he's aware many people look up to him and if he were to reveal what he looked like, his appearance alone could make it harder for someone of a different skin color or gender to relate to him. He's anxious to exclude people, and thus tries his hardest to appeal to the widest possible audience.

Intellectual Characteristics

For the average observer, it's quite hard to get a read on whether Tower truly is an idiot or if he is just trying to be funny. Taking his whole past into account, he's clearly not an idiot and thoroughly enjoys pretending to be an idiot by saying off the wall things. He's a brilliant tactician, has a great sense of timing and is good at motivating others. He's also extremely charismatic despite his obvious awful sense of humor and does know what to say and what not to say when it matters. His lack of intelligence more stems from the fact he is mostly uneducated and can't provide any meaningful criticism or insight when speaking to an expert. Whenever Tower makes a decision or statement he is usually going off his gut or his own opinions and he is very capable of drawing clever parallels.   Additionally, Tower forms his opinions based on his own experience rather than academic teachings and news outlets. It's very hard to change his mind on something he has already made up his mind about which is why he has a reputation for being a bit stubborn. He'd rather form his opinion based on information he gets from people like Sylvia and Blaze then use information from news outlets and people who may be more qualified. This is not generally an issue as outside of pushing for civil rights and personal freedom across Jeslore, he's not exactly a very outspoken person, and most people don't look at Tower for his views on complex political/economic issues anyway.   Even though he generally doesn't feel the need to learn new skills, he is a very quick learner. In fact, he aced his driver's license course within 2 weeks. He also has great memory and can recall things said to him decades ago.

Morality & Philosophy

Tower's approach to life, like his true personality is far from simple. A running theme with his philosophy is the conundrum of protecting others not only from physical harm but also psychological harm and how he can build himself as a person capable of doing both. His answer was to cover himself in armor and attempt to make light of every situation. His armor and shield is a way for him to protect others from physical harm whereas his sense of humor and tendency to make jokes is his way of shielding people from the grim realities of life.   Tower often compares himself to a clown, which to most people seems like a self deprecating joke without realizing it is really a statement on his situation. Tower has built himself up as a person many people look to for guidance and escapism and therefore finds it hard to express himself without alarming the people that depend on his demeanour. This is also why Tower refuses to take off his helmet, as his helmet is now part of his identity, once more drawing the comparison to a clown who without his makeup and red nose is not a clown. Tower often says that wearing a helmet makes life easier, so he doesn't have to force himself to smile or so no one can see him cry, which again is often interpreted as a joke (which in the moment may have been one) but it also shines light on that due to his helmet and demeanour it's harder for people to tell how he really is doing. It seems he often feels trapped in a persona that he knows people rely on and is anxious that one day he'll have to disappoint people.   He's someone that bottles up emotions and hides away in a suit of armor where he is nearly invincible to both mental and physical damage, and while he's obviously far from depressed his real feelings do sometimes show their head. Much like his problems, his solution to them are intricate and hard to follow. In a sense Tower chose to let it define him. His most famous quote is "Life is a performance, it's up to us to deliver a good show.". What he means by this is that he believes life has no intrinsic meaning and that it's up to the individual to give it meaning. It also shines light on how Tower views his peers: they are his audience. He knows that he is their escape from reality and wants to make it worth their time. Life is too short to be sad and if someone can't make themselves happy he is more than willing to lend a hand. By viewing his peers as an audience he also gives his own life meaning; if he has to give his life to save his loved ones so be it, because what is a good show without at least a bit of tragedy?   By thinking of his whole life as a performance he effectively took away his own fear of death, because certainly it is part of the script. It also helps him cope with his own problems, as being typecast isn't necessarily a bad thing. In essence his approach to life helps him do more than just overcome his own fears with relative ease, it allows him to make the best out of a dire situation while still shielding his friends both physically and mentally.

Taboos

Historically, Tower is one of the most controversial figures to ever live. Not necessarily because of politically incorrect or bigoted views, he's fairly progressive especially for a medieval figure. Most of his controversy comes from his godawful sense of humor and the fact he thoroughly enjoys annoying people around him with puns and dad jokes, especially people who don't like them. He'll make jokes at his own wedding, inauguration into the immortals or even the wedding ceremony of the king's daughter, all with the finesse of an elephant in a porcelain store. He's often seen as a rebellious figure (despite being a liberal at best) because not even his own superiors can get him to act a certain way when he doesn't want to, and threats only encourage him to continue even further.   Tower unashamedly, enduringly supports no limit humour with the only 2 stipulations being that it has to be funny and that it can't be punching down. He hates it when people try to control him and is no stranger to openly challenging authorities to waste their time by trying to stop him. In his own words: "Edgy humour is one thing, insensitive humour is an entirely different thing. Being mean isn't humour at all.". Even in the modern era he actively baits journalists into writing articles on him by saying things that are so obviously edgy jokes and tagging them in it.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Tower is mainly motivated by his desire to shield both himself and others around him from physical and psychological pain. It's a clear motivator behind all of his actions, particularly his behaviour in battle.

Savvies & Ineptitudes

Tower has a strange knack for knowing when to move somewhere on time to be able to block incoming damage. He seems to be decent at predicting when an enemy will attack who and prioritizes his strategy on it. He is generally good at improvising and acting without much of a plan and taking each factor into account when doing something.

Likes & Dislikes

Tower is fairly well known to be a big fan of pigs and cows. On the farm where he lives there's generally 3 animals present: Cows and pigs that Tower offers sanctuary and spiders from his wife's spiderfarm. It has lead to frequent arguments with Sylvia who owns several predators that bother his animals but the spouts don't usually last long.   He's also an enthusiast of music and comedy. He and his wife frequently attended open stage nights in bars and he himself is known to write down things he thinks are funny in his diary. Another thing he is very enthusiastic about is serving the crown. While not a drone that carries out tasks of his king without as much as a second thought, he has received several awards for loyalty and devotion. Even though he can be very critical.   He's, however not a fan of high-class society and referring to people by their rank. He's gotten into trouble before by referring to his superiors by their name and even the king himself he will just refer to as Erik. This dislike of high-class shenanigans has lead to some less than successful meetings with his parents in law who are Drider nobles. He gets bored quickly of being more mannered than he actually is, something that his father in law can appreciate more than his mother in law.   Tower is not a fan of religion at all. While he can appreciate some of the symbolism behind it and the virtues it tries to teach he often criticizes it for how miserably it fails at uniting people. He's not very vocal about it because at the end of the day he believes that the person who kills in the name of god is to blame for the action instead of the god itself but especially in his diary he has expressed how he wishes that people would abandon it in favor of working together towards a future created by mortals.   As he found after getting revived, he is also not a fan of getting told what and what not to say, particularly as it applies to comedy. Tower hates being limited by social justice and the like and often just ignores it when people lecture him on how his joke was offensive. Tower's a firm believer in the idea that anything can be poked at satirically as long as it harms no one but he is also of the opinion that a person needs to have at least some thick skin and be capable of taking a joke. Especially when it applies to public figures.   Despite occasionally cracking the offensive joke, the one thing that Tower hates most of all is the idea that one person would be worth more than the other based on income, ethnicity, sexuality or literally anything else. Tower is well known to confront discrimination whenever he spots it.

Virtues & Personality perks

Tower is not a man with a plan, surprisingly though it doesn't clash too often with his team. Anyone who has fought by Tower's side will tell you that he is not someone with a steadfast plan and will change strategy on a whim while keeping his team notified about it. He's a decent team worker and seems to be skilled at predicting what the enemy is up to. While not a good habit to have as a general, this is something that makes Tower an extremely skilled team captain as he can instruct his unit to quickly adapt to new threats and overcome challenges fast.   Tower's definitely a loyal friend and won't let anything hurt them if he can help it and accepts them for who they are. Despite the fact Sylvia is religious, which is something he doesn't agree with and the fact her pets often harass his cows and pigs which he definitely doesn't agree with, he will stick up for her when someone insults her sexuality. He sticks by his friends, no matter what and helps steer them in the right direction.   Tower is very selfless and is well known to take shots to defend others. He keeps a tally mark for each shot he's taken for a civilian and a red tally mark for each one he took for his friend in a separate book.   Tower is extremely independent. Despite the fact he is very enthusiastic about serving the crown, Tower would definitely criticize King Erik Dragonheart if they were to make a series of bad, bigoted decisions and would outright abandon him or even inspire an insurgency if the king were to become corrupt.   Tower is very righteous and chivalrous. He will often take legal matters into his own hands and be the judge of whether someone should be locked up or not. He usually takes into account how young a criminal is, how poor they are or whether they're lying or not. If a child were to steal food Tower would most definitely interfere with the arrest and set them free but if it's not as innocent he won't be so lenient.   Above all, Tower is extremely casual. Most of his liberal opinions on things that were heavily criticized back in his time (like same-gender marriage) come from the fact he just doesn't care about it and feels like it's more important to focus on more pressing issues like preventing discrimination among the people and maintaining order.

Vices & Personality flaws

Tower can come across as very militaristic, he often stresses how the defense is an important sector to fund politically as it might mean that an enemy incursion could destroy everything that was built, including the equality and freedom that Linnessian society has developed over the years.   Tower has a bad tendency to snap at people when they come across as dumb to him, especially when it leads to them being rude to others. He doesn't like it when people bully others and he has a bad habit of getting involved even though it is not his business.

Personality Quirks

Tower is pretty infamous for cracking puns regardless of the situation. Overall Tower is known to have a horrible (or amazing depending on your perspective) sense of humor. He has a bunch of bad jokes and puns written down in his little booklet. He usually makes these joke whenever a relevant situation presents itself, regardless of whether it is insensitive at the moment or not. Another page in his booklet, keeping track of how much times he's been slapped over cracking a joke indicates that he thinks this is funny.

Hygiene

Tower probably not as concerned with hygiene as he should be. While he keeps his armor in a good state of repair he is not as concerned when it comes to his home. The only thing that annoys him is how his wife has a habit of webbing the house, causing him to trip over the wires.

Religious Views

Tower is one of the earlier people in Jeslore to start questioning the intentions of the vanguard, a thing he is often criticized for.

Social Aptitude

Tower is an extremely charismatic person that can light up the atmosphere in a room. He thoroughly enjoys exposing the more infantile side of prissy people and is often successful at doing so. At first impression with his armor he wouldn't strike anyone as the charismatic type, but he most certainly is. He knows about etiquette and table manners as his wife came from an aristocratic family but more often than not chooses to blatantly behave like a hooligan just to make a statement. He's also very outgoing, being quick to strike up a conversation and as he isn't attracted to people based on appearances never has the problem of being shy or awestruck. Additionally, he's very engaging when he speaks, and can put some sauce on his stories without having to unnecessarily embellish it.

Mannerisms

Tower always sounds like he's having a good time, cracking jokes and generally just being charming. He's very engaging and generally gives off the feeling of a comedian whenever he's in the room. He always draws attention to himself for better or worse. He can act polite, but he's most comfortable around friends where he can use as much profanity as he wants. When he's free to do what he wants, he curses quite a lot and doesn't try to curb his extremely thick accent. He also tends to slur a little bit when he talks, which generally just makes his insults and jokes all the more entertaining.

Hobbies & Pets

Tower is very enthusiastic about pigs and cows and has a large piece of land as a sanctuary for them. He's also a big fan of comedy and music, a thing he often does with his wife is to visit open stage nights in bars to watch performances and at special occasions, he even visits theatres.

Wealth & Financial state

Tower rakes in a lot of money but doesn't really show it. He lived on a farm with his wife and son. After getting revived and finding work in television he rented a small appartment with Blaze and Viktor.
