The moment that Ito created Jeharr and the ancient planes. At this moment, the first mortal souls were created from sparks, the ancient Gods were born and bathed in blood, and the laws of space and time were forever changed.
Hundreds of Ancient Gods are born into conflict with each other and the existing Primordial Gods for the fate of the Mortals and the world that they inhabit, Jeharr. This war would last for 100 years, claim the lives of the majority of the newborn Gods and herald the beginning of the period called, the Old World.
During one of the raging battles of the Ascendant War, Baltus, The New God of Creation, struck a major blow against Ito, The Old God of Creation. This wound manifested itself in a massive scar in the continent of Northern Tukarsh. This newly created waterway would eventually become a major hub of civilization in the later Old World period and throughout the Age of Man.
In the wake of the Ascendant War, the victorious Gods blessed their mortal champions, the Inheritor Species, and damned the shorter lived, Pestilent Species who were favored by the defeated Gods.
The first civilization of Mortals is formed under Eternal-Emperor Etterhael who would rule for most of the Mossix's almost 5000 year existence.
The Mossix, under the leadership of Eternal-Emperor Etterhael declares the fundamental division between the Inheritor Species and the Pestilent Species. This declaration posited that the Pestilent Species were inferior for their frail existences and loyalty to the chaotic Gods.
Based on recognition of the inferiority of the Pestilent Species by the Mossix Empire, the already relatively commonplace practice of enslaving Pestilent Species became officially recognized as legal and moral. Moving forward the world's economy would be dominated by slave labor and production.
With the backing of the Gods of Order, the Mossix Empire takes full control over civilization the world over, controlling all of the continent of Akim'Dovear as well as the south of Tukarsh and the coastal regions along The Long Sea. The Mossix flourishes with riches from all of the known world coming into the Empire, technological progress slows due to the wide spread use of slave labor and magical gifts from the Gods.
Vast quantities of tin are found in the homeland of Akim'Dovear allowing for the production of bronze, which becomes an integral part of the world's economy.
Tribes of Pestilent Species outcasts and escapees from the Mossix Empire begin to interact and one another. A translation and cooperation between species and tribes becomes more common and increases the rate of advancement of peoples living in the north and west of Tukarsh beyond the reach of the Mossix.
A slave named Fleen in the capital city of the Mossix Empire in service to the Eternal-Emperor's armorer steals the secrets of bronze metallurgy. Escaping to the Pestilent Species tribes in Northern Tukarsh, offering the Pestilent tribes a reliable way to acquire high quality bronze weapons and tools. Limited access to tin on Tukarsh prevents mass distribution of bronze weaponry and Mossix remains unconcerned by the Pestilent tribes.
While initially a small and insignificant hold, the settlement of Scarfall on the eastern coast of the Scar, this settlement would one day herald the ruin of the Mossix, and the Coming of the End Times.
Innovations in mining practices and the development of more complex societies on Tukarsh allow for the discovery and mining of iron ore in both northeastern and northwestern Tukarsh. Its uses remain limited, without a way to refine it into more usable a material.
Chieftain of the Astaraia tribe, Zacharias, claims to have witnessed evidence of the return of the chaotic Gods in the starry night sky. Zacharias unites the northeastern tribes in preparation for war with the Mossix.
Support for King Zacharias falters as the return of the chaotic Gods and war with the Mossix fails to arrive. Tribes begin to split off into fractured territories once again, although their societies remain culturally close and communication and trade becomes more commonplace.
Following the death of King Zacharias unity among the Pestilent Tribes fails and their leaders begin to in fight over the succession of Zacharias. The leaders of the Pestilent Tribes are unable to elect a successor and independent warlords divide northern Tukarsh. Zacharias' bloodline would continue but would never produce another capable leader like Zacharias.
A new way of refining the previously useless material results in the creation higher quality iron tools, weapons and armor that revolutionize the economy in Scarfall and would come to make it the center of the Karshen world over the next 200 years.
While the odd freebooter bothered Mossix traders occasionally on the Long Sea, their impact could always be mitigated and forced to the fringes by a lack of non-Mossix controlled ports and the well supplied, well funded Mossix naval force of Triremes. Starting around the year 6100 BBA, pirate ships with Pestilent crews from Tukarsh began to penetrate deeper and deeper into the Long Sea and the soft underbelly of Mossix trade. The growing economy on Tukarsh gave rise to more non-Mossix ports on the Long Sea, which often offered such pirates safe harbor from imperial naval forces. Better materials and ship building techniques also allowed for the creation of larger, better ships called Quadriremes the likes of which became the scourge of the sea to Mossix traders.
Relations had always been poor between the Inheritor Species in Mossix and the Pestilent Species on Tukarsh, but the advent of the iron weapons and tools as well as the production and combat advantages they offered were too great to ignore. Mossix declare iron to be a heretical, brutish material and that it brings malady to all who lay hands on it. Mossix designate Scarfall to be a den of heresy and corruption. This grave warning would be ignored by the residents of Scarfall as they continued to reap the benefits of their superior material.
Nearly 4000 years since the victory of the Interventionist Gods in the The Ascendant War, Wanaji, a priest of Atar declares that she has seen a vision of the future and that the Non-Interventionist Gods would soon return to Jeharr. This news further strains tensions between the Mossix and the Pestilent tribes to the north.
The small Mossix controlled settlement Trossend is the first coastal settlement to be overwhelmed by a large force of well equipped, well coordinated Karshen brigands. The deaths of the settlement's citizens enrage the Mossix which were capable of living forever under normal circumstances. Mossix declare that thirty Pestilent Brigands would die for every Mossix citizen and soldier slain at Trossend.
Mossix troops overrun defenders in a naval invasion at Scarfall. The surprise attack caught defenders of the city and the populace unprepared thanks to powerful Mossix Spark Mages shielding the fleet with illusory magic. Thousands were slaughtered in retaliation for the sacking of Trossend and the city was razed to the ground. Despite superior materials, Karshen forces were powerless to drive the Mossix soldiers out due to the powerful Battle Magic used by the Mossix Spark Mages. For days all the Karshen forces outside the city could do was stand by, listen to the screams and watch the smoke rise.
Malice grows in the Karshen states following the Burning of Scarfall. Independent, uncoordinated groups of warriors harry outer Mossix settlements. Little progress is made as more major settlements prove too great to capture and Mossix Battle Magic continues to prevent larger armies from forming.
Saint Chumas, Patron Saint of skilled workers in service to Baltus acquires iron weapons, armor and tools from Scarfall. Chumas smelts and "purifies" the iron, creating a primitive form of steel. Saint Chumas then declares that this new material is sanctified and suitable for use by the Mossix Empire. Iron remains in limited availability.
Karshen explorer Alkenis, using new robust ship designs and magical navigational equipment, returns from a voyage to the southeast and reports making landfall on a new landmass. This landmass is referred to Alkensi, war prevents further expeditions to Alkensi.
For the first time since the end of the The Ascendant War, Eternal-Emperor Etterhael is unable to commune with the Gods of Order. The Eternal Emperor will continue to keep this a secret, but the Mossix begin to experience a weakening of divine magic across the empire as well as other curses. Anxiety surrounding these bad omens reduces morale in the Mossix military and citizenry in the face of inevitable hostilities with Karshen forces.
Vocumos, a descendant of Zacharias returns to the ruins of Scarfall to pay homage to the their ancestor, who was the only Mortal to ever successfully rally the Pestilent States. During their stay, it is said that Vocumos became the first and only Mortal to ever commune with Modus, Goddess of Secrets. Vocumos gained a terrible knowledge that drove them mad, but also gave them a small measure of control over existence. Vocumos, among the ashes of Scarfall on the 101st anniversary of its destruction, cast a powerful curse upon the world. This curse created the Vocumos Effect, and is credited with bringing about the end of Mossix supremacy in the Old World.
A slave revolt near Mosoris, the capital of the Mossix Empire, in a region called Grey Soils succeeds in allowing the escape of thousands of slaves who commandeer trade ships and escape to pestilent ports. It is assumed that Mossix sympathizers assisted in the escape. Multiple other slave uprisings occur as a result and most are put down in brutal fashion. This event gives insights into the Mossix and its brutal slave institution as well as the lack of technological and tactical advancements made by the Mossix military.
The presence of the Non-Interventionist Gods had not been felt on Jeharr in 4000 years and there worship had almost entirely been forgotten. Thousands of Mossix clergy and many Karshen leaders and theologians collectively begin to receive visions and recognize omens first declared by King Zacharias 2000 years prior. This troubles the already agitated Mossix who had felt the distancing of their own Gods for approximately 100 years by that point.
In 5887 BBA, Estmenites, an accomplished Karshen historian and theologian devoted to the goddess Xihana, published what most historians agree is the the most important piece of literature in the Old World period, The Three Histories. This document provided a general history of the Pestilent Species since The Ascendant War, a history of the life and death of Zacharias the King of the Karshens, and a history of Scarfall. This document is credited with inspiring the reunification of the Pestilent States and starting the First Karshen War.
Oral retellings of The Three Histories by Estmenites, the return of the Non-Interventionist Gods and slave revolts in Mossix territory by slaves of the Pestilent Species inspire a sense of shared identity among the Karshen Pestilent Species. This sense of shared identity will soon boil over into hatred and violence against the Mossix Empire.
Saint Chovu was a slave living in Haestone, a protectorate of the Mossix Empire. Chovu had heard of the return of the Non-Interventionist Gods and became inspired when some religious texts detailing the doctrine of Onus were smuggled into Haestone by other slaves. When Chovu's master, Rashid found out about the texts, he demanded that Chovu tell him where he had hidden them. Chovu endured increasingly more extreme punishments before being martyred, an event which caused his canonization as a saint of Onus and a slave uprising in Haestone.
The Mossix population, comprising mostly of the Inheritor Species, historically had little interest in large wars and campaigns, due to their otherwise long lives and slow rate of reproduction. As relations between the Pestilent Species of Tukarsh and the Mossix Empire continue to sour and hostilities loom on the horizon, the Mossix citizenry prepare themselves for war.
Following the Martyrdom of Saint Chovu, the population of Pestilent Species was incensed and driven to violence. Fueled by a lust for vengeance and ethnic pride, the Mortal named Thalsites led an incursion deep into Mossix territory on the The Primary Subcontinent. This marked the first time that large group of hostile soldiers had entered Mossix territory in 4000 years. The incursion led by Thalsites defeated the unprepared defenders with a lightning fast attack against the unwalled town of Haestone. By superior numbers, equipment, tactics and the element of surprise, Haestone was taken with little effort, all of its Pestilent slaves were freed, and every single one of the Inheritor inhabitants was killed in brutal, often torturous fashion. The quote that has become synonymous with the brutality of the massacre is accredited to Thalsites himself, "They who live long, ought to die long." The massacre took place over the course of a week.
The inevitable conflict between the Mossix Empire and the Karshen States began in earnest following the Haestone Massacre. Enraged by the death of so many Inheritor citizens, Eternal-Emperor Etterhael declares war on the Karshen States which he insists on referring to as "mere tribes." The First Karshen War would last for 29 years and mark the beginning of the end for the eons long reign of the Mossix Empire.
Following the Eternal-Emperor's declaration of war, both the Karshen States and the Mossix Empire rushed to mobilize armies and to organize industry for wartime production. The Mossix struck first in an attack across the Long Sea to retake Trossend and establish a foothold on Tukarsh once again. While the Mossix forces under the command of Admiral Hakara enjoyed some initial victories, even recapturing the town of Trossend, the offensive quickly stalled as well organized, well equipped Karshen forces arrived. While Battle Magic historically gave Mossix forces the edge over any other army in open combat, Admiral Hakara found himself on the defensive as his mages fail to make a significant impact on the field. This is the first recorded instance of the Vocumos Effect in history and it would result in the offensive losing all momentum.
After weathering the cold Diucaligo in Trossend, Admiral Hakara's forces began to feel pressure from the armies of the Karshen States. Without the momentum that the offensive began with, Hakara determines that it is necessary to retreat and assembles the Combined Long Sea Fleet of the Mossix Empire to evacuate Hakara's army and civilians alike. This would prove fatal as once the triremes of Hakara's fleet were together and undergoing the massive evacuation, the Karshen fleet quadriremes, whose quantity Hakara had severely underestimated, arrived and destroyed the Combined Long Sea Fleet with a combination of superior ship design and non-magical fire projecting weapons. This defeat would mark the end of the Trossend Offensive and Mossix domination of the seas.
A series of battles would take place on Tukarsh and at sea between defending Mossix forces and armies of the Karshen States. The fighting is brutal and both sides generally did not take prisoners and fought bitterly regardless of the odds. These battles would by and large result in Karshen victories, and by the year 5844 BBA, any remaining Mossix forces and citizens would be forced off of Tukarsh, or into hiding.
Following the obliteration of Mossix forces at the Battle of Oriskeer, the remaining Mossix forces and citizenry either fled or went into hiding as their settlements burned and survivors were slaughtered en masse. This would mark the last time Mossix military forces would have any significant hold on Tukarsh.
Armies of the Karshen States launch a large scale military invasion of Akim'Dovear, but face fierce resistance from the Mossix defenders. This series of invasions tests the ability of the relatively disunited Karshen States and results in minor defeats and pyrrhic victories for the Karshen invaders. With complete control of the Long Sea following the Battle of Scarrefour decades earlier, Karshen forces are easily able to retreat when necessary, prevent Mossix naval rearmament and raid Mossix coastal regions, driving much of the Mossix citizenry inland. Karshen forces also easily overwhelm most of the now isolated island territories of the Mossix Empire.
Despite sporadic victories the citizenry of the Karshen States grow tired of the resource and manpower drain created by the First Karshen War. Following nearly three decades of war and victory on Tukarsh, the leaders of the divided Karshen now begin to view one another as greater threats than the Mossix Empire and turn their attention to internal conflicts. It would take two more years of skirmishes and deescalation for peace to reign over Jeharr once again.
Two mensis before the 30th anniversary of the start of the First Karshen War, the Karshen States declare victory on Tukarsh and peace reigns on Jeharr once again. The Mossix Empire under Eternal-Emperor Etterhael, having been on the defensive for over two decades, accept this declaration of peace, legitimizing the position of the Karshen States.
