When the world of
Mortals reached heights that rivaled those of
Orbis itself, and the once so-called
Pestilent Species strode forward with untold cultural, arcane, theologian, and technological advances, a terrible sickness took hold over the world. There are many explanations for what brought about the end of the Age of Man, but all paled in comparison to the last word of the
Gods of Jeharr which scoured the world with unquenchable flame.
Saint Chumas' Fire
The Scouring is so named for the complete cleansing of the world that left nothing but gashes across the surface of Jeharr. One of the known tools in the Gods' cleansing of Jeharr is Saint Chumas' Fire, an unquenchable, unbiased fire that burns away almost any material, leaving nothing behind.
Saint Chumas' Fire has a characteristic purple, red, and blue flame which burns slowly and at a relatively cool temperature. Ancient records exist which state that those unfortunate enough to be burned by Saint Chumas' Fire describe it as being no warmer than a hot soup in the moments before they are destroyed. No evidence of what was burned away remains, even the soul of Mortals burns away to nothing. Saint's Fire burns almost everything, spreading evenly in a circle across the ground and even slowly burning down into the ground. Few materials are immune to Saint's Fire, the most prominent of which being lead.
During the Scouring, the world above ground was covered in Saint Chumas' Fire, burning away animals, cities, civilizations, histories, cultures. All was destroyed, leaving only those who fled deep below ground or were saved by the Gods to reseed Jeharr and begin again. The Scouring marked the end of the Age of Man and the beginning of the Age of Savagery, a dark period of lost advancements and deterioration.
