The Cloudburst

"In time, even the mountains will be washed away."
-unknown mariner

Summary

The myth of "The Cloudburst" is a prophecy commonly espoused by mariners and the Mentese. The myth of the Cloudburst states that one day, the heroes that rise up to appease or defeat the forces of The Trench will falter and the world will be destroyed totally and finally by a massive storm called the Cloudburst. The waters will wash over the whole of the world, the coasts will be swallowed in an instant, the deserts will become quicksand, and the caves and the world below will be drowned. In time, even the mountains will be washed away.   While it is worthless to strive to defeat or prevent the Cloudburst, it can be delayed. As has happened the last two times that the Trench has spilled over onto Jeharr, heroes will rise to appease or defeat the influence of the Trench. Make no mistake, however, once the Cloudburst manifests, it will be too late for all.

Historical Basis

The First and Second Coming of the End Times, that occurred around the year 5000 BBA and 36 ABA respectively, each lasted for years and are the closest historical approximations to an event like the Cloudburst. These events saw the forces of Lech, God of Depravity and ruler of the Trench and Blair, Goddess of Fear overrun much of Jeharr. Additionally, both events were ended when groups of exceptional individuals rose up and slew the leadership of the incursions. During the first of the two events, torrential rain was so severe that it made the surface of Jeharr effectively unlivable, driving the remains of civilization deep underground. While the world did recover from these events, some say that the Cloudburst already arrived during the First Coming of the End Times, which brought about the end of The Old World. While those who prefer this interpretation of the myth of the Cloudburst are a minority, their interpretation is true in a sense as it brought about the end of the world as it was known then, leaving behind a world which is unrecognizable.   Lech and the Trench have exhibited a pattern of behaviors involving the overrunning of Jeharr, lending credibility to the legend. However, many scholars believe that the end of the world is more likely to come from other places both within and without of Internus.

Spread

The myth is quite prolific on The Storm Isles, coastal settlements, ports, and among mariners.
Date of First Recording
