Phoebus Observatory

A flagstone path, unmaintained, broken and choked with weeds, winds its way to the top of a steep hill; once alpine, but now little more than a convex meadow, slowly recovering from a terrible fire.   Here, a shattered ruin gives structure to the aggressive weeds and brilliant green ivy which threatens to overwhelm it. It is a modestly sized building, framed both with huge stones and bricks. One side of the building was once crowed with a graceful dome of brass and glass.   The building looks like it may have taken a direct hit from a bomb. The dome is shattered, with only shards of glass and twisted, corroded brass remaining to show its original shape. About a third of the stone and brick structure is ruined as well.   Inside the ruined house, a number of tents have been erected, their openings fastened together to create a relatively protected space.   Rooms
  1. Observatory -- two stories tall and taking up a full half of the building, the area beneath the dome is the main, scientific laboratory of the observatory. It is suppose to have a huge telescope, a bunch of specialized detection and computation devices.
  2. Studio (Living Quarters/Kitchen) -- basically a studio apartment which takes up the first floor of the portion of the building not beneath the dome.
  3. Bathroom -- squeezed in there somewhere.
  4. Library -- most of the second floor of the portion of the building not beneath the dome is a library and office space.
  5. Subterranean Crypt -- Locke never really goes down there, but there is a stone-lined room down below the observatory, a part of the ancient stone monument that was here before. For centuries, there have been stories and rumors about the crypt, about an assortment of secret entrances into and out of it which may or may not exist, and which go nobody knows where.

History

The Phoebus Observatory was built about five hundred years ago, over the skeleton of a monolithic stone circle whose origin has been long forgotten. Since then, it has passed through the possession of some of the most revered Vislae theorists to ever live.   When the War began, the Observatory was the possession of famed researcher Locke Aletheia. It was badly damaged, and left unattended during his absence. Luckily, the library and highly specialized scientific instruments were not on site when the disaster occurred.
