Simone's Home

Simone lives in a former factory. Her neighborhood was a large manufacturing quarter during the war, and now that combat has spun down, so has production, leaving a large number of warehouses available. Many other artists have moved to this district, taking advantage of the industrial warehouse spaces for maker-studios and wide open arts/performance spaces.   Simone’s factory is one half of a three-story brick building. The ground floor is smooth cement, with no walls dividing it. It currently sits empty, the raw materials storage pile was raided while she was gone. There are two entrances to the factory. One large rolling metal garage door facing the street, and a side door facing the neighboring building. Because her factory is half of a larger building, a solid concrete is opposite the side door. The first floor has no windows.   A perforated steel stairwell is welded to the wall about 15 feet up from the side door. The diamond-shaped lattice of the steps lets liquid pass through easily, and because it’s welded to the well, it rings out and wobbles slightly with each footfall as people ascend.   The second “floor” is a series of catwalks made of the same steel lattice flooring. Straight catwalks about the width of an average sidewalk line both the front and back walls beneath rows of windows. Each window is a large-paned window that is about one-story tall, and rectangular.   There are two larger landings among the catwalks and a couple that zig-zag above the floor of the warehouse. In the corner against the cement wall opposite the side door, there is an rectangular landing, which is an unofficial lounge with a small WC. Kitty-corner to this landing is a smaller triangle shaped landing.   The third floor is the rooftop of the warehouse, which is enclosed with curved glass walls and roof, creating a solarium over the entire rooftop. The stairs from below exit into a large rooftop garden space which has become completely overgrown while Simone was away. She thinks of it as “the jungle,” and hasn’t ventured very far into the space.   Simone’s bedroom is under the solarium roof against the back left wall, opposite the garage, on the same side of the factory as the stairwell. The bedroom also has a glass ceiling and walls around the “outside” walls, and you can look down into it from above. She has some curtains in place for privacy, but usually leaves the ceiling uncovered at night.   The bedroom is “walled off” from the rest of the courtyard, creating an enclosed space with a lockable door. Her bed is inside, and a big claw-footed bathtub sits against the back wall next to a window. She has a WC and sink up here as well. She has a couple of wooden screens she threw together around her bed, which she moves around as room dividers for additional privacy. There is a dresser beside her bed.
