Simone Character in Jared's Invisible Sun Campaign | World Anvil

Simone

Simone

Appearance

Simone has not spent much time or cash at the changeries. She is largely an average human woman, with jaw length hair cut on a blunt angle. She wears dark eyeliner emphasizing her bottom lashes, making her already pensive eyes look wide and melancholic. Simone has polychromatic skin, which changes constantly, and shifts depending on how the light hits it, like an opal or duochromatic pigment. She is not particularly athletic but often wears clothes which expose her iridescent skin. She commonly wears unitards underneath woven sleeveless tunics, sheer lace, or jeweled body chains. She also often wears a large overcoat and soft embroidered shoes.

History

Pre-War

Simone was once known in Satyrine as Alilaina, a socialite turned installation artist. Her work was often shallow, meant only to delight and entertain. Her medium was small contained realities that distorted experience into exaggerated fundamental pieces in an “eternal present” moment, for example an early popular work “Joy and Belonging (kissed by butterflies as sunflower in sunflower field).”Alilaina was a Weaver, understanding the “formulas” of magic used by Vances or the summoned power of Goetics, but ultimately found the “Threads” model of reality perceived by the Weavers to be her view as well.   When War came, Alilaina’s worldview changed dramatically. Her art had been naive, fun, and came easily. Beauty was fleeting and easy, and took little to create great impact. But suddenly everything was threatened, and nothing fleeting was safe. Something new came to Satyrine: stakes. Alilaina fled as a refugee, not from terror, but from horror. The people around her had done awful things in the name of defending themselves. She turned her face away from the question of evil, and the fear of losing yourself trying to keep yourself alive.

The Grey

In the grey, Simone grew up in the shadow of a horrendous conflict. Her mother fled Nazi occupied France, and raised Simone in Bakersfield, CA. As a teen, she followed the works of French existentialists, especially Sartre. She worked as a photojournalist, moving from failing local paper to failing local paper, chasing independent contributor status and rarely making an impact. She often uncovered corruption and deliberate lies, but was rarely if ever able to publish proof.

Return, After the War

After returning to Satyrine, Alilaina decided to change keep her name from the grey, and reappeared in society as Simone. Her work is now focused on clearing away deception, helping individuals find a subjective truth, and healing trauma from the war.

Game Summary: Shining Isle

Pre-Shining Isles   Simone experienced a few different highs and lows while investigating the Shining Isle.   Simone doesn’t like to kill or see things killed needlessly, and won’t eat meat that was taken from a slain animal. Nearly eating the pig made her sad. (Despair)   Horror and Sorrow for the charnel pit, even though it’s old. (Despair)   Successfully convincing the tall ones to allow the Lacuna to make their own choice about staying or returning affirmed Simone’s self-determiniation philosophy. (Joy)   Used up my wicked key.   Completed Aid a Friend Arc - Gained 13 Accumen, 4 mage coins. +2 Despair, +1 Joy

Shia Surprise!

Simone enjoyed the creativity of the storytelling circle. She’s not a big fan of being scared by a scary story, but she enjoyed the comraderie of a collaborative experience, the lovely party, and meeting new people like the aid of the Star Prince. Simone enjoyed being able to try new weaves, such as mirroring her appearance.   Gained 1 Joy, 2 Despair, 1 Magecoin, 2 Accumen

Simone’s post Game 2 downtime
09-30-18

How I’m spending my downtime: Creating pieces for a gallery showing in my home- my idea is to use “words become truth” on a canvas at the beginning of the show, then route people through progressive Idolum installations until they reach the end, where the same word is on another canvas, hopefully having changed their perception and visualization of the word. The word I’ve chosen is Cowardice.   In order to avoid conflict with the squatters in my building, I’ve pitched the showing as a “coworking space” show, where their own installations will be shown upstairs on the catwalks. Anyone who doesn’t play cool, I’m going to try and throw cash at them to get them to leave for the night. I’m leveraging my satyrine society contacts and Prima’s cell to generate buzz for the show. — squatters: messiah card, half go along, half get uppity. Leaders emerge.   This is my main “day job” work during the two moth period. I want to do some mundane stuff as well, like shopping and maybe renovating my upstairs quarters. I’d like to request an Aethyrlink from Gwyn.   Since Marcus lives in my workshop space, I intend to spend lunches with him learning about the nine princes and info on satyrine since I’ve been gone. I intend to introduce my friends to Marcus and have them over for lunch one day to do that. — sealed door: Marcus is just really busy so we don’t get to hang out too much.   I want to follow up with my lawyer about the Sebastian situation and resolving my right to legal housing. I want to try to connect with other folks in the neighborhood, but I need to be careful about who I talk to (want to avoid the mafiolios who may not appreciate someone nosing around). I want to go to Cerealia to talk to them about what’s happening, and see if they’re on my side, or are part of Sebastian’s push to remake the neighborhood in his interest. Are they cool chef artists, or are they jerks? I also want to poke around the Cannery, depending on who owns it. I’ll check with my lawyer first (Lawyer needs a name). I also want to check in with my next door neighbors, maybe under the guise of inviting them/giving them a heads up about the showing.   Lawyers investigation; endless maze on Grey sun, they’re getting the run around, documents haven’t been delivered Cerealia: sooth card: empty gallows — they aren’t aligned with Sebastian, but they aren’t opposing him. Cannery: conspirator card The Warren- next door neighbors - sooth card: the devil   Also, Locke and I want to follow up with the people who were pulled out of the hate cyst by the Blood Prince. Locke has been spending time in my home as he’s been restoring his. — sooth card; the revolutionary - Simone starts developing a crush as we do this compassionate work together.   We earned, these in care, people who owe the blood prince a favor. They aren’t ‘prisoners,’ they’re in medical care/rehab/quarantine, all in one facility— interested to get to know their caretaker   Lastly, because Simone has been putting steady work towards a project, she’s feeling motivated to address some of the problems she’s been avoiding. Simone wants to maybe get the rooftop back under control, so she’s started exploring the Jungle. It makes her extremely anxious. — sooth card- the hunter “important events occur in the wilderness” Simone finds traces of a very very big spider in the jungle. Lots of smaller spiders.

Session 1: Downtime

Downtime

Simone, faced with a home full of squatters, head full of horrors, and a soul full of conflict, is avoiding her problems. Instead of facing her issues head on, she went back to her childhood home for a while to pick philosophical fights with her dad, who is currently single and in an extra testy mood.   She got tired of that after about a week. He won’t acknowledge that there’s anything that needs fixing, just burying. He refused to stop calling her Alilaina, so she left.   Simone knocked on the carved door of her wise friend Prima, the highest ranking member of Simone’s weaver cell. She swept her in, gave her tea, and listened. Listened about the hate cyst, and the nagging doubt left by the Grey. Listened and nodded, listened and affirmed. Acknowledged the travesty, the atrocity, the depravity and excess of violence; looked it in the eye and wept with her.   The house is always full of women, and women’s energy, women of all ages and states of being. Nobody really asks to stay as a guest, nobody is really invited. People just stay until they know they don’t need to any longer.   They played a week long match of the spider’s game. As they played, they drifted through rooms. The kitchen, a study, a bedroom, an attic. Each was filled with women talking, gossiping, warning each other, inspiring each other. The intimate gnosis of hushed, smiling words. This was no catty gossip. Gossip is a word used to debase the social wisdom women share with each other to keep each other armed, awake. This was a secret map of the shifting mindfields made of human deception.   Simone fell asleep in the greenhouse. When she awoke alone, she decided to work on a piece, and in doing so, attempt to gain a better understanding of the threads that make up reality.   Her piece was a looping 24 hours in fast motion, of an alley remembered from The Grey, between a bar and a bookstore, where poets vomit in the fog.   After finishing her work and demonstrating it to some of the members of her cell, Simone starts to get the feeling that she’s ready to leave Prima’s and return home to get more information about her squatters. After going around to kiss cheeks and say farewell, she realizes that it’s been almost a month since she left her Father’s house to stay here.   Even though it had been a productive time practicing her craft, the weight of all that’s pending hits her when she steps out of the front door. Marcus, Dad, the Hate Cyst, Whoever the hell those people are in Chez, the Jungle… But, where she’d normally feel the urge to just turn right around and walk back into Prima’s, and let friends distract her, this time she feels something else. She wants to get control back.   So, she starts walking towards her neighborhood.

Simone is 65 and has never been married, and lives with her mother, so, uh, she goes.   * Meets Alex, is kinda distrustful of how he invites them back to his house right away.   * Once Alex transports us back to that “hospital,” Simone starts to remember who she is but feels desperately anxious about the responsibility she left behind in Grey: her mother. Even though she’s “A lie,” Simone is extremely conflicted about the idea that the important things in the Grey she was invested in no longer matter.   * Simone realizes she’s thinking of herself as “Simone,” not Alilaina, even though she remembers the truth of her younger age.   * Simone remembers why she left and gets extremely sulky that someone brought her back without her consent.   * Simone feels immediately vindicated when she finds out it was a trap, that Alex was creepy and her instincts were right, but that is immediately snuffed out by revulsion and horror.   * When she encounters the suffering engine, Simone screams and starts investigating rather than trying to fight.   * When Gwyn starts shooting the victims in the wall, Simone is desperate for him to stop, because she sees them as victims which have to be helped.   * She leaves, planning to try and come back when she can figure out how to help.   * She goes back to her childhood home, hoping a familiar face might ground her, but ended up butting heads with her Dad Dodd, who refuses to acknowledge the travesty of the war and just wants to bury it and move on.   * She leaves to go home, but finds it overrun with strangers. She meets Marcus, who doesn’t seem to have time for her, and he insists he lives there. She realizes she has to get to the bottom of this, but she just doesn’t want to deal with it.   * So she just kind of peaces out to find a familiar friendly face, and goes back to the home of her Weaver mentor, Prima, the leader of her cell.
