Drinking Touch Spell in Ithekshem | World Anvil

Drinking Touch

Fangs are for amateurs.
Drinking Touch is Blood spell of weak power that allows a mage to drain the blood from a victim through physical contact. As long as it is maintained, blood will burst through vessels and seep through flesh to be absorbed, flowing into the wizard without a trace. Although the name indicates touch, any contact will do, making it particularly fearsome among blood mages with the ability to constrict or entangle their victims.   Drinking Touch requires only a small amount of blood to cast, but consumes a small but constant amount of magic power to remain active.

Effect

Drinking Touch absorbs the blood from a victim through contact, at a rate dictated by the mage's power and skill at Blood magic. The more a wizard envelop their victim, the more blood they can drain, putting large spell-caster at a distinct and unpleasant advantage over their smaller kin. Such exsanguination is not subtle nor painless - blood erupts from broken flesh and veins break to feed the wizard's touch. However, the spell's effect is constant and does not distinguish between friend or foe. Anyone the mage touches are effected, without mercy or consideration. The spell lasts for as long as the wizard choses to maintain it, and some of the blood drained usually goes into keeping it active.
Sometimes, the spell becomes a victim of it's own success, fed with so much blood that even the wizard can't simply will it away.

Blood for the Blood Spells

For the martially inclined, Drinking Touch allows the caster to consume their enemies and use their blood to power other Blood spells. While most Blood Mages prefer the easier the handle sort of sacrificial victims, some find the idea of destroying a foe with their own blood too delightful to pass up.

In the World

Beyond its use in combat, some mages use Drinking Touch to avoid the gore-splattered aspect of Blood Magic - or, at least, lessen it. Some vampires in particular look down on those who use fangs or knives to force blood from a victim, finding a sort of morbid elegance in doing so with just a touch.   Other, more unsual spell-casters take advantage of their unique anatomy to drain a staggering amount of blood in battle - a spell-casting Kraken in the Iron Ocean has learned to use the spell with all twelve of its tentacles. A victim completely bound in its vast grip is consumed much quicker than a human's touch ever would.

Well, hope I don't lose blood quite like it's described here. There's enough danger to survive in this world that being able to painfully desiccate someone through touch is not something that'll bring me peace of mind. Hopefully I'll have moved on before anything like that happens to me, but I'll be keeping my guard up for certain. Maybe I should remain in a crowd... dare I put others in danger to increase my own protection? It's worth pondering and maybe I won't like who I see if it comes down to it. - Nemo, World Traveler

A spell that can draw blood from a victim with any type of contact, and the descriptions are gross and spooky! I especially like at the end there's a cultural context to the spell, some vampires considering the spell more elegant than drinking with fangs. It's a nice (drinking) touch!

Thank you! :D   Yes, I think it's always fun and important to include cultural and social contexts to a spell! If it exists, people will start incorporating it into their lives and way of living :D
