Bergrem was born as son of Bennkar Killberken, Leird of the Marshes and head of the proud Berken Clan. Already at the age of 6 he was promised to Gudfrigg KillKentkar, whom he married 10 years later to secure the bond between the clans. Only one year later their first child was born, but Berggrem was not present at the birth, because he was at war with the Hartbert Clan in the south together with his father and the Kentkar Clan.
The Hartbert Clan was subjugated and after the annexation of the Dernhold Clan and the conquest of the tribes on the Dornkrak peninsula, Berggrem was elected as king of the newly united kingdom of Lomgrinden at the age of 26, after his father had fallen on Dornkrak half a year before.
