Undine's Tears

Brief

Undine's Tears is a myth that involves many relgious elements, namely the goddess of water, Deveira is said to have chosen a Vessel and gave them incredible skill in water and ice magic. This water dragon was named Undine Nacarea.

Myth

Undine Nacarea was a young dragon when she started to have dreams of things that would come to pass. She wouldn't remember these dreams in the morning but if she looked in mirrors or in puddles she would see glimpses. They were innocent enough, but the coincidences soon scared her and she decided to push that part of her aside and live in a coastal town, using the dragon talent of shapeshifting to morph and appear humanoid.

She lived there for many years trying to escape the ability, moving from adolescence to adulthood until one day she woke up from a nightmare, and found small pearls in her bed and crystals at the edges of her eyes. These pearls seemed to show glimpses of the future and Undine took this as a sign to accept the talent into her heart.

Undine began to tell people fortunes, touching their hands while holding one of her pearls, or with spheres of ice if she had bartered off her current collection of pearls. She would interpret her own dreams into advice and guidance for the people. Times were well for Undine, she had a stable career and upbringing and had fallen in love with an elven man, a sailor. They were to be wed. "Undine, I know you can make your own pearls but to make you a ring, I want to find one of my own. I will go to sea and find the perfect pearl. Hold onto my locket, a promise for my safe return."
"Undine, I'm so sorry. Your fiancée's boat was ravaged by a horrible storm. There were no survivors."

Undine Nacarea was inconsolable. Sympathies and gifts were brought to her, but nothing seemed to quell the sadness in her heart. All she could do was weep for her lost love, clutching the locket as it became littered with tears. Something happened then...While her tears would turn to pearls overnight, when they touched her beloved's locket, they simply layered it in a faint sheen of magic and crystal. Undine was blinded by her tears, and it was three days of mourning before she noticed that the locket on her lap was gone. In its place was a Pearl.

After a great tragedy, she wept so much that her tears turned into a pearl.

Historical Basis

There is debate in the scientific and religious communities over the truth of this myth. One large point in favour of the historical truth of this myth is the existence of the Pearl of Undine-- a pearl far larger than average. This pearl is stated to be physical proof that any myths surrounding Undine are fact, though others believe it may just be a coincidence.
