The Martian Independence War
The first and so far only major interplanetary war, this is the founding event of the PDRM. Those few deaths were the catalyst of a budding K-1 civilization, and as such are regarded as heroic. There are statues of the 9 in the greenhouse outside the primary governmental building in Utopia. The one person who survived is in fact, still alive, due to the progression of life extension technology, but doesn't like the attention, especially since one of those killed was her wife.
The Conflict
Prelude
After rumblings of self rule by Martian Colonists across Mars, Utopia Base officially declared their independence from the United Nations.
Deployment
The only UN security forces on the planet were at Phoenix base, 450 km away. 12 of the 20 them immediately began a trek down to Utopia upon declaration of war by overland rover, a 2 month journey.
Battlefield
The only fighting occurred on the doorstep of Utopia Base's primary airlock, and in one of the outlying greenhouse habs.
Conditions
The UN demanded immediate entry into the base, claiming it was still UN soil. All exterior doors had been sealed, so as a show of force, and to gain entry, they were given permission to fire upon an outlying greenhouse hab that was deemed likely to be empty.
The Engagement
The UN security forces were denied entry, due to being a foreign police presence. After a tense discussion and a message sent back and forth from Earth, they were given permission to fire upon one of the outlying greenhouse habs as a show of force. While these were typically uninhabited, there were 9 people in there at the time, as the hab chose was far from the front door. Upon being fired upon, they immediately attempted to leave. but the doors had noticed the rapid drop in pressure and sealed the blast doors. 1 managed to get into emergency bubbles, but the other 8 were not as lucky. 3 died immediately, 4 died later under medical supervision, and the last person recovered, but with severe brain damage.
Outcome
The video of the hab depressurizing was leaked on Earth, and caused massive support for the PDRM cause, especially among people from nations that had fought for their own independence.
Aftermath
Was the catalyst for acceptance of the PDRM as a foreign entity to the UN. On Earth, it was and still is referred to officially as police action, not a war.

Legacy
Is the founding event of the PDRM, and so is widely told. It is often used to portray Terrans as using excessive force, and not scanning options and planning ahead.
