Emperor Philarion Pendleton Character in Irrelion | World Anvil

Emperor Philarion Pendleton

Supreme Afrington Emperor Philarion Oakley Pendleton (a.k.a. Pendleton)

Supreme Emperor of the Afrington Empire, once the greatest soldier in the army, then the greatest general and military commander, whether or not he is loved by his people is of little consequence to him or his nation. He is arguably one of the mightiest individuals of the current age, and runs the mightiest nation.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

Incredibly lean, yet every inch of his frame is filled with exceedingly large amounts of muscle, which does not do his true strength justice. He is tall and proud standing, imposing his presence wherever he goes. Philarion's Elven blood would have him be quite thin and lanky, but he is large, immensely so, muscle on every bit of his body. Centuries of training and fighting has left his body as toned as possible, the lines of his muscles creating a fine weave with the hundreds of scars on his body, more than any other person alive. Despite the immense damage his body has taken in battle, he is still regular in his practice, and spars with noble knights to keep fit.

Body Features

Although largely healed over, if one looks close enough, you can find traces of scars from the Battle of Vanderbilt's Pass that still mark most of his skin. Almost invisible now, the remnants of them still remain on every part of his body,

Facial Features

Towards the edges of his face, thin splotched tendrils of red split and merge, spreading towards the center of his face, stopping around his eyes and mouth. These red birthmarks are the telltale sign of a godborn.

Physical quirks

He has not once been observed to take his hand off his sword if it is possible to do so. If he can achieve a task with one hand, he will do so, leaving his right hand on the pommel of his sword at all times.

Special abilities

Godborn Of Hitrius

At birth, the signature red splotches were seen across his face. A godborn, and his were bright, vibrant, and plentiful, a sign of being chosen by an immensely powerful god. Despite this, it was unknown for many years what god had chosen him. He has spoken very little of it publicly, but in the book written by a healer from The Battle of Vanderbilt's Pass, he recognized an energy from within Pendleton while he was being healed.   Hitrius has long been a patron god of healers and medical practitioners. The god of Health and Vitality, many small temples to his name are spread across the land, built by those who would use magic to heal rather than to harm. The mage, a devout worshiper of Hitrius, attested that, when healing Pendleton from injuries that were so severe, he should not have made it back to camp alive, let alone live and recover, he felt an energy being spread throughout Pendleton's body. This energy was acknowledged by other healers, but seemed to be enhancing their magic, and furthering their healing abilities. The healer and author wrote that this energy was exactly like what he felt when he prayed at shrines to Hitrius, except much more potent and everpresent. Pendleton has only acknowledged this quietly and behind closed doors, which has spread out slowly as rumor and gossip. No one knows the true extent of his powers or abilities granted as a Godborn of Hitrius, but his survival of his injuries at Vanderbilt's Pass is a testament to what is known to be possible.

Personal history

Early Years

Born to a minor noble family in the city of Ironwall during the early days of its construction, Philarion, as an elf and born to a family of elves, was expected to adopt the ways of war that elves had practiced since antiquity, of fine arts of blades slender and fair, of magics, and of the bow and arrow. Philarion had no wish to spend time with these, and from the young age of 10, was for all intents and purposes, shunned and exiled from his family, only being welcomed to continue to live in the ancestral home, which he did very little of.   For the next 140 odd years, until the mid 750's, he spent nearly every waking hour training with other noble families of the city, particular of dwarves, and of humans who were inclined to heavy armor and weapons. Despite his elven ancestry giving him a disadvantage at learning and perfecting the arts, and gaining the strength required to properly utilize the gear, 140 years is nearly 2 human lifespans in full, and he wasted little time. By the age of 155, still a young adult, he joined the Afrington army, which he had seen come into existence and grow.

Military Career

After lifetimes worth of training, Philarion was a skilled warrior, and although he maintained a lean and scrawny outward appearance, his strength was unrivaled, and known to many esteemed warrior families, who he had either spent decades training with, or had heard about him due to this. It was during the first few years of his military service that war formally broke out with the Claydor Kingdom. Disputes had stood over who owned the mountain range separating the two, and therefore the ores within, and for years did the two nations battle.   Early in his career, Philarion showed great promise. He was, however, loathed by his superiors for being a wild card. He rarely obeyed orders, but ultimately got the task done, to the possible detriment of his regiment. It took many years for him to grow more responsible and caring for his fellow soldiers, and as he did, he slowly rose the ranks, eventually attaining the rank of Colonel.   Not long after attaining the rank of Colonel was he thrust into the Battle of Vanderbilt Pass, where he suffered grievous and long-lasting injuries, and a humiliating military loss. While the loss was chalked up to being a "failure of imagination", it took many years for him to step back into the military, recovering from his injuries.   After stepping back into the military, he only grew more zealous in his tactics. He trained forces in the most ruthless combat tactics he could imagine, and perfected them. Eventually, he rose to be General of the Afrington Military, and Chief Military Strategist. At this time, he came to know the Emperor, Alinith Veymore. Veymore saw immense potential in Pendleton, and slowly but surely moved Philarion from the battlefield. Although war was officially over with the Claydor's following the loss at Vanderbilt's Pass, and no wars came up with any other nation, he still trained his forces ruthlessly and endlessly. Eventually, however, the emperor grew old, and Philarion was chosen to be the next emperor. Not only was he the greatest warrior in the Empire, he was the greatest military leader and strategist, so to Veymore, the choice was clear.

Emperor Pendleton

Shortly before he was raised to the status of Emperor, he got to learn what it takes to rule, not just command, from Veymore. Veymore, having learned about his exile from his family, made his final decree as emperor to be the complete expulsion of the Pendleton family, sans Philarion, from nobility. Philarion, at this point, had not spoken to anyone in his family in centuries, and never would again. They were forced to leave the country due to widespread hatred against them. On a sunny fall day, Veymore died, and his body was paraded through the streets, as Pendleton was raised to be the Emperor at the footsteps of the castle in Ironwall.   His reign thus far has been quite steady and without significant military conflict, but his methods have been anything but. He has slowly increased economic output in order to fund a larger military, and has personally overseen the training of entire regiments of men in the ways of war. Most people both inside and outside of the nation see it as a campaign to create a force that could, in a single attack, wipe the Claydors off the face of the earth. His hatred is well known, and they are the longstanding enemy of the Empire. He continues to rule with an iron fist, enforcing stability, discipline, and might in every aspect of the nation.

Accomplishments & Achievements

During his reign, Pendleton is credited with over doubling the size of the Afrington forces, refining the tactics they use to what could be considered perfection, and in bringing stability to almost every facet of life within the Empire.

Morality & Philosophy

He has always held to a philosophy that might makes right, and that the strongest has the right to rule. He applies this not only to himself, as likely one of, if not the strongest warrior, but to his Empire, which in recent times, he states he believes could single-handedly wipe any other nation out in mere days.   Likewise, he believes that the best defense is a good defense, rather than a good offense. His training as a warrior saw him grow to be skilled in all manners of heavy arms and armor, and he has trained his armies as such, stating his philosophy that an unstoppable force becomes the immovable object, and vice versa. Most of his infantry are heavily armed shock troops meant to shrug off blows while cutting down enemy forces as such.

History

After joining the army to make sense of this new world through war, the only thing he knew, he quickly and rapidly rose through the ranks of soldiers. He had no bravado or overconfidence in his skills, and was grim in his resolve. His superiors favored him for his no-nonsense take on everything, and realized quickly that his skills surpassed the majority of the Empire's army, the empire himself took an eye towards him. Challenging him to a spar on a camp near the Afrington-Claydor border, Grant nearly succeeded against the emperor in a spar, surprising everyone, including Pendleton himself. He quickly took him under his wing and trained him further, making him a general in charge of training new troops. He has for years now stood as one of, if not the closest friend of the emperor, of which there are very few, and his personal sparring partner. It is commonly joked that the Emperor will never finish training Grant because he may be the one and only person capable of beating the Emperor in a fight.
