Grant Firthington

General Grant Abelard Firthington (a.k.a. The Misplaced Man)

The misplaced man, who claims to be from a far off land, cast here by foul magics, he is the greatest warrior in the empire, confidant to the emperor, and his sparring partner.

Physical Description

Identifying Characteristics

To men who have seen him without a shirt on, it is said he has a large marking on his back. It appears as a small X near the bottom of his back, large and spanning from side to side, from which the top of both lines extends a vertical line, with one in the center extending twice as far up. It was assumed for some time to be a symbol of his native language, but that was dispelled when all remembered he came to these lands speaking common and knowing of the alphabet already. He has stated it is religious iconography, but has not elaborated, or it has not been widespread knowledge. The markings are scars, and one of the emperor's physicians attests that once a year, he comes in to have the scars traced over with a sharp blade, ensuring the scar markings never dull or fade with time.

Personal history

Much is known about Grant, due to his propensity for drunken rants while at shoddy bars in the capital, and having given speeches to large amounts of men under his command, large parts of his history has been pieced together.   Many years ago, as a much younger man, hardly 20, Grant found himself at the mercy of a witch, who he was meant to slay. Using foul magics, she cast him out and away, where he found himself deep within the forests near Raven Valley. He made his way to the city after much difficulty, only to suffer a massive shock. This was not the land he called home, and was vastly different. Grant often tells how magic, where he was from, was mere legend to most, and no alchemy existed either. Being a soldier of a noble family where he was from, he enlisted in the empire's army to find purpose, where he excelled at warfare, and quickly climbed the ranks.   During this time, it was found that no healing magics nor potions work on Grant, and instead bring great harm to him. He states that his faith is in a god that he has not heard of here, of a name too powerful to utter. He believes his stalwart faith in this god is why the magics of this land may harm him instead. Due to this, he is the most vulnerable man in the empire's ranks, for he can not heal quickly nor fully from many injuries.   Despite this, he has never suffered a severe injury, save for a scar over his eye, which he claims comes not from battle, but instead from nodding off at a bar and crushing a glass tankard under his face. He quickly drew the attention of the emperor, for whom he quickly became a close friend and advisor to, alongside a general in charge of training new troops, and the emperor's personal sparring partner, where he has remained for years training troops and helping build up the army.

History

After joining the army to make sense of this new world through war, the only thing he knew, he quickly and rapidly rose through the ranks of soldiers. He had no bravado or overconfidence in his skills, and was grim in his resolve. His superiors favored him for his no-nonsense take on everything, and realized quickly that his skills surpassed the majority of the Empire's army, the empire himself took an eye towards him. Challenging him to a spar on a camp near the Afrington-Claydor border, Grant nearly succeeded against the emperor in a spar, surprising everyone, including Pendleton himself. He quickly took him under his wing and trained him further, making him a general in charge of training new troops. He has for years now stood as one of, if not the closest friend of the emperor, of which there are very few, and his personal sparring partner. It is commonly joked that the Emperor will never finish training Grant because he may be the one and only person capable of beating the Emperor in a fight.
