The Firesea

The great western ocean, so named for its plethora of volcanic islands and underwater volcanic rifts, the steam that sometimes rises from the waters in many places, and the way the whole sea looks to "catch fire" in a good sunset. A great archipelago is strung for countless leagues across its eastern arc off shore from the western edge of the Ieros continent. The northern boundary of the ocean is marked by the continent of Nubir, while far to the west is the mostly forgotten continent of Vandelay. 
Travel around the archipelago and the Ieros coast is relatively safe, pirates and monsters aside. Travel to the west, by contrast, is dangerous and rarely undertaken. A mysterious empire called the Psaroa dominion controls the heart of the ocean, demanding that ships pay heavy tribute and hire a dominion guide who will only permit travel on certain prescribed routes. They are known to faithfully honor these deals, and are also known to ruthlessly destroy vessels that do not submit to these terms.
