Magicorps

The Magicorps is the division of the Kinilan Army where most of the magically inclined soldiers serve. Best known for the feared Devestator Squads that tear through enemy lines with appalling ease, the Magicorps as a whole are far more complex than even most in the regular army realize. Time and again, they proved their value during the Great War, and they've grown so powerful that many even in the Kinilan Army fear them, and are furiously studying countermeasures to protect ordinary soldiers from magical threats - research most in the Magicorps oppose.

Composition

Manpower

The Magicorps largely avoids use of traditional military formations. Most of them operate alone or in small and adaptable groups. During the Great War, they introduced a unit called the Devestator Squad, a group of 6-8 junior magi taught just enough to be seriously dangerous, escorted by units of 12-20 mundane soldiers specially trained to protect the mages, and would strike hard at the enemy, taking them by surprise, then retreating, leaving the regular army to exploit the gap they opened in the enemy formation.

Structure

The Magicorps is split into two branches, the Magi and the mundane Support Legion, who are often much more accepted by the regular army. The Magi are split into 5 ranks, depending on their magical capability: the Archmagi, Senior Magi, Magi, Junior Magi and Apprentices - those serving in combat wear the insignia of auxiliary Lieutenants if they have not had additional military training or earned a promotion on the front lines, enough rank to order soldiers to escort them to safety in case of an attack.   Apprentices are kept well away from the front lines, and are a product of the Great War. Previously, the Magicorps filled its ranks by hiring individuals who had already developed their magical talent, but the war had such a demand for personnel that they formed academies, teaching magically capable volunteers a minimum level of combat magic as quickly as possible. Academy life was difficult, and often produced mages who had a lot of power but very little of the control or temperance that wizards develop in a more leisurely apprenticeship.   Junior Magi make up the vast majority of the Magi, and are currently mostly products of the military academies. Most are limited to the lowest 3 tiers of magic. Their main role in combat is in close range support, largely in the form of the Devestator Squads.   Once a Junior Mage reaches the 6th tier of magic, they are promoted to Mage, and once they reach the 9th tier - the highest available under the influence of the Anchors - they are promoted to Senior Mage. These ranks tend to have rear echelon or covert roles, as their abilities develop into a broader range of skills. Many work as alchemists and artificiers, producing powerful potions and equipment for use by other units in the army,   One becomes an Archmage the first time they wield High Magic. Many spellcasters never do this, because it is necessary to venture beyond the range of an Anchor to do so,which is generally considered foolhardy in the extreme. Archmagi are permitted to do as they will, within reason - at this point they are less members of the military and more powerful spellcasters who have informed the military that they are available to support them upon request. It is very rare for a Senior Mage in active service to become an Archmage, as the army rarely operates outside the range of an Anchor, though this happened 3 times during the Great War after the destruction of the Rethis Anchor. Indeed, the title is extended to any who manage to wield High Magic, not just those who make themselves available to the military. They rarely come close to the front lines, though late in the Great War, Archmagi in both Kinilan and Rethis served, unleashing devestating magic upon the military.   The Support Legion is a force of regular soldiers who exist to protect the Magi. They are trained far more defensively than the typical soldier, and their officers provide tactical advice to the Magi they serve under. Even behind the lines, each Mage has a squad from the Support Legion that serve as aides and protectors, though they often find themselves used more as servants.
