Iarion Mages Charter (E-arry-on)

Structure

Archmage

The pinnacle of a Mortal Mage, the Archmage is a master of both theoretical and practical magics, having submitted and then tested their theories of magic. In order to reach this level, one must spend years studying the ways of magic and its very nature, but also understand how to use magic in the practical sense and have experience using it over many years.

High Arcanist

A rare rank only attained by those solely devoted to the theoretical side of magic, those few High Arcanists within the Charter are often eyed with suspicion by other members of the Charter. Some mages of the Charter even consider the rank to be an insult, how can you be a mage without actually using magic? For the High Arcanists, however, their love of magic urges them to uncover its secrets through equations and study, rather than through practical application.

Magi

Once an Arcanite has completed their studies and have taken the Oaths, they are uplifted to the rank of Magi, where they are bonded to a Wytchguard and given leave to use their magics when and where they see fit, provided it does not breach the Oaths, of course. Magi can continue their studies, however, in order to reach the rank of Archmage, though this also requires practical experience, often requiring the Magi to undergo placement advising other institutions or supporting certain industries.

Arcanite

For those seeking to learn the ways of magic on Ahuduir under the guidance of the Iarion Mages Charter, upon their acceptance to any Charter College they will be given the rank of Arcanite, becoming and Acolyte to Magic itself. These Arcanites spend years studying the various schools of magic, the history of magic, the planes and their outsiders, alchemy, magical creatures, specialized magical applications and more, all the while being informed of the various misdeeds magic has caused over the years. Once an Arcanite passes their final theoretical and practical exams, they take the Oaths and are bonded with a Wytchguard, a bodyguard, watchdog and executioner (should the need arise).

Public Agenda

"Magic has, for too long, remained entirely unregulated, leaving its usage up to the whims of hedge wizards. This blatant disregard for the consequences of their actions has caused no end of catastrophes throughout Ahuduirs history, from the Bloodplague to the alchemical aberrations of the Crusade of Bronze & Bone. Today, we say, NO MORE! Magic exists to aid us in our lives, not to dominate and destroy us, therefore those mages who undertake our training and the subsequent Oaths can be trusted to only use destructive magic in their own self defence. The Iarion Mages Charter is already a trusted ally to many of the nations of Ahuduir, and now all can be ensured that only trusted mages will be in positions of political power. Today, we see the future of Ahuduir, a continent now safe from the horrors of magical extremes." - An excerpt from the speech given at the opening of the Iarion Charter College

History

When the Melorisar awoke to find the world rebuilding after the devastation of the Crusade of Bronze & Bone, their mages were horrified that the ancient horrors of magic were still being practiced and utilized, despite the long history of such atrocities. With the largest magical institutions either recently defunct or so small that the mages of the Melorisar outnumbered them just by existing, and no government seeking to regulate magic, these mages took matters into their own hands. Once the Melorisar had settled in Hacoal, the mages built themselves a grand college of magic, though its doors remained closed for fourteen years, as the council of Archmages believed that the world was not ready for the Charter.
During these fourteen years, the agents of the Charter began to undermine the people's trust in the other magical institutions, never lying or placing people in danger, just exposing their crimes and reminding people of what they were capable of. The mages of Ahuduir were not blind to these transgressions and attempted multiple times to resist or undo the Charter's manipulations, though these more often than not backfired on the mages. As bandit hedge wizards and rogue alchemists continued to cause problems and wreak havoc on peoples, and as news spread of their actions, the common people began to demand that the government do something to control these dangers to society. At first, limitations and fines for break said limitations were put in place, then governmental magic watchdogs put in place until, soon enough, a wave of anti-magic fear spread out across the continent. Scared people would lash out at the mages, witch burning occurred, the mages retaliated with surgical strikes and the creation of minions to defend them, causing further anxiety and military build up, until things exploded with the Dirivan incident. The then Grand Mage of Utvha Dirivan was already known to be an incredibly paranoid man, driven further down the deep end of his paranoia when the Council of Utvha began to place restrictions on his usage of magic. Believing that the Council was going to try and kill him, Dirivan moved first, taking the entire Council of Utvha prisoner and attempting to force them to sign over their powers to him.
This attempted coup would only last a few hours, as a small coalition of Council staff, adventurers and three Charter Mages from the Hacoal embassy would fight their way to the Council Chambers and defeat Dirivan. The rogue mage was actually defeated in a single duel with Archmage Irovard, shunted to the plane of fire after a prolonged battle, where Dirivan was reduced to a charred skeleton before being brought back to the material plane. In the aftermath of the coup, and after seeing the Charter mages in combat, the Council of Utvha was fully behind the Charter and their efforts, though it also saw a wide-spread move to limit the power of mages in politics. This would change when, in 68 SA, the Charter would announce that they would retrain all mages and train future mages in their practices and bind them to a select few Oaths in order to prevent such betrayals from occurring. As a part of this, they also announced that their own organization of magical watchdogs, the Wytchguard, would keep a close eye on their own mages, ready to remove them should they attempt to break any of the Oaths.
