Toryth Sultraad
A tired ex-revolutionary who has settled down in Kara's Vale, where he can hopefully live out the rest of his life in peace and quiet. When Silifrey Brightwood flees from the village one night to the Harsh Yonder, Toryth knows she will never be able to survive on her own and takes it on himself to follow her, resulting in an important journey and an unexpected friendship.
Physical Description
General Physical Condition
Toryth maintains a generally good physical condition, though he is not in the peak condition he was a few years ago.
Body Features
Toryth has a lean but wiry build, ready to hold his own in a fight but not by any means a brawny shape.
Facial Features
Toryth is usually seen with a somewhat severe or stony expression on his face, which is rugged and angular. His hair is wavy but somewhat unkempt, and he sports a rather impressive handlebar moustache.
Identifying Characteristics
A cruel scar runs down Toryth's forehead, across his left eye and cheek. The scar is likely a reminder of his revolutionary past in Driavnica, before he settled down to a more peaceful life in Kara's Vale.
Special abilities
Although some of the scars of his past have left him with some limitations of motion (he walks with a slight limp, for example), Toryth is nevertheless uniquely gifted in his prowess with a shortsword. This has made him a well-liked protector in Kara's Vale.
Apparel & Accessories
Toryth is usually fairly plain-clad, though his dress is often recognizable by a fairly large amount of leather. This includes his long duster and knee-high boots he usually wears.

Personal history
Little is known of Toryth's early childhood, save that he was born and raised in Driavnica, the capital city of Strikkonia. He spent much of his early adulthood in the harsh working conditions of the Great Foundries of Driavnica. Some time later, when a movement of revolutionaries against the strict class system of Strikkonia began to coalesce and hope to challenge the ruling regime, Toryth joined this movement and became one of their most renowned fighters.
Unfortunately, when the movement eventually attempted an uprising to effect a change in the regime, the rebellion was crushed by the Strikkonian Constabulary, and its members were either arrested or scattered across the face of Erania. Toryth himself remained on the run for a long time before the heat eventually died down, at which point he settled in the remote village of Kara's Vale, where he has remained ever since, harboring a grudge against the powers that be in Strikkonia, and a resentment of the population that refuses to do anything about them.

Education
Early in his adulthood, Toryth received some martial training as he tried to enter the Strikkonian Constabulary. He was quickly disillusioned from this notion, however, when he began to see the wanton cruelty and unfairness inherent in the Constabulary's operation. Beyond that, his education has come more from experience than from formal training.
Employment
Early on in life, Toryth planned to join the Strikkonian Constabulary, but quickly discovered this was not for him. He set his sights lower and contented himself to work in the Great Foundries for a time, but he soon began to rise in the ranks of a fledgling revolutionary movement.
After the movement was crushed, he settled in Kara's Vale, where he became something of a protector for the villagers against bandits, brigands, or wild animals.
Accomplishments & Achievements
Toryth is quite the hero to the people of Kara's Vale for his continued protection of their village, though he himself takes a very self-deprecating view on his presence there.
Failures & Embarrassments
When Toryth reflects on himself, he thinks of most of his life as a failure, moving from one unsuccessful endeavor to the next. His most regrettable failure, however, is the failed rebellion he participated in.
Mental Trauma
Often times, Toryth is awakened from his sleep by nightmarish flashbacks of the failed uprising in Driavnica. He frequently finds himself unwillingly recalling the deaths of many good friends, as well as the indifference of the people of Driavnica.

Toryth has a decent knack for planning details, though he can sometimes miss the big picture in the process.
Morality & Philosophy
In his earlier days, Toryth had a pretty strong "end justifies the means" mentality, willing to take ethical shortcuts if it meant a better result for the most people. However, since the failed rebellion (and likely due in no small part to his witnessing the death or capture of so many good friends), he tries to take a more pragmatic philosophy.

Motivation
Since settling in Kara's Vale, Toryth has lost most of the motivation for justice that drove him in his revolutionary past. However, he hasn't given up hoping deep down that change is possible for Strikkonia, and he would gladly enter the fray if he thought there were a good chance of that outcome.
Savvies & Ineptitudes
Toryth is very capable with most forms of physical combat, whether with a weapon (he is particularly skilled with a shortsword) or barehanded. Conversely, his utter lack of grasping even the most basic concepts of Essence is almost enough to make a Teaphali believe the ability to Windcraft is beyond some people.
Virtues & Personality perks
Despite the cynical exterior, Toryth contains a deep sense of empathy, and cannot help but make it apparent even when he would prefer people see gruffness and indifference.
Vices & Personality flaws
The cynicism that pervades a lot of Toryth's thinking is a constant threat that looms over him, moving to drag him down to a low point he can't get out of. It often manifests itself in the form of excessive alcohol consumption, or isolation to the point that others worry he might be on the point of physically harming himself.
