Hycernia

Hycernia is the most recently founded human kingdom, having been founded 300 years ago in 4592. The land has a deep history of ethnic and feudal conflict and was unable to unify for several centuries. This sentiment has since morphed into a healthy nationalism in most regions with some rough edges.
Hycernia provides much of the human realms with wood and alchemical ingredients. Hycernia was the first land to create complex accounting and record keeping. This has greatly improved their merchant capability compared to other kingdoms. Even a primitive system of investors is forming. Given recent agricultural discoveries about 10 years ago, a budding ingredient harvesting industry is also growing.
Notably, this budding alchemy harvesting industry has fueled an explosion in the practice of Necromancy throughout the land, this is most visible in the region of Kuyavia (ruled by Prince Ryan). Now many people are raising their political voices to suppress this evil practice.
Symbol: The official symbol of Hycernia is a a coat of arms flanked by a lion and eagle. The lion and eagle are said to represent two different forces coming together for the greater good.

Hycernia operates as a feudal kingdom, and the king appointed his 5 adopted sons as the feudal lords of the regions.
  1. Prince Jack governs the southwestern region of Renguard. Renguard was usually a buffer zone between the nations to the east and Hayasa-Azzi. It is a turbulent location, but it is quickly becoming a vibrant trading location where modern accounting was developed out of necessity.
  2. Prince Michael governs the western region of Wellock. Wellock is known for its advanced lumber industry and swamp lands. The swamp lands are often bustling with treasure hunters and rare plant gatherers.
  3. Prince Gavin governs the southern region of Merford. Merford is known for its fishing villages, ports, and fertile farmlands.
  4. Prince Ray governs the central region of Lombardy. Lombardy houses the capital of the nation, and most of the land is owned by nobles. Governing here can be rather stressful.
  5. Prince Ryan governs the north eastern region of Kuyavia. Kuyavia is known for its ancient ruins and traditions, quarries, and stoicism.

Demography and Population

Hycernia is a primarily human kingdom. Most of the nobility consists of humans here, primarily because other races were seen as outsiders or did not live in Hycernia long enough to build up sufficient Reputation and Wealth to be a noble. The few non-humans who attained nobility were either appointed or married into it.
75% of the population is human, 5% half elves and half orcs, 5% dwarves, 5% halflings, 10% gnomes and tieflings.

Military

The military consists of both a professional standing army controlled directly by the king, and feudal levies consisting of conscripts from the regional feudal lord. There is some mobility between these two armies, as soldiers who earn glory will often be invited to become a professional soldier. There are currently 20,000 professional soldiers. Professional soldiers are given preferred treatment in almost all things (except in magical magisteria)
Military formations typically consist of pikemen, archers, cavalry, and mage siege squads operating in maniple formations.

Religion

The two accepted religions are the Church of Torm, and of Selune. Torm is the official state god, while Selune is an accepted religion usually practiced by rural and lower class folk.

Foreign Relations

  1. Hycernia is a new but powerful trading partner with Hayasa-Azzi, now that Hayasa has stabilized after Hayasa's reunification.
  2. Nobunaga is still a trading partner with Hycernia, but that relationship has become strained due to the war brewing between Hayasa-Azzi and Nobunaga. Nobunaga continues to try and persuade Hycernia to cut trade ties with Hycernia.
  3. Marquesas and Hycernia have only recently begun an official relationship now that Marquesas stopped its isolationist policy.

Education

There is no standard education system. Most children learn skills from their parents or during an apprenticeship. Orphans tend to form criminal gangs or run into an altruistic or mercenary person who takes them in.

Infrastructure

There is 1 cobbled road between major cities, while well worn dirt roads connect the main road to nearby towns.
Long distance ship travel is not common in Hycernia. Fishing boats are common, but ships are not. Fishing villages offer minimal sea travel along the coast, while the well developed ports offer occasional long distance travel.
Cities are primarily made of stone with stone walls and gates. Towns only have well worn dirt roads. The only public transportation available is the occasional cart or wagon in a city.
There is no form of national healthcare. The sick can go to one of the two churches, Torm or Selune, for healing. However, the churches with magical healing are almost all located in cities. Rural areas may have small chapels, but the priest there has almost no magical abilities. Rural sick must travel to cities for official healing. But most rural towns have resident or traveling mages who offer healing services no questions asked. These mages are garbed in black and purple robes, and often live on the edge or outside of the town. They do accept payment, but mostly they will take payment in being unmolested by any townsfolk. The new grassroots movement Forces Against Necromancy have occasionally attacked these mages (with or without evidence of wrong-doing), but this leads to all black and purple healers to vacate the area, leaving the sick to pile up.
