Great Library at Winterborn

Overview

The Great Library consists of over 100,000 books, scrolls, and tomes to study. This is not a lending library. Anyone wanting to study here must pay a fee. The amount of the fee depends on the subject matter, amount of time inside the library, how much help is needed to find the subject matter, and even if someone wants to hold the old the books, scrolls, or tomes to study or only wants a copy.
Rules of the Library:
  • No food or drink is allowed in The Great Library.
  • Magical copying is allowed but only by special permission of the librarian and only done by the librarian.
  • No sharing of resources with another without paying the rate of a second person.
  • No magic may be done in The Great Library, except by a librarian.

Other Libraries on Inanta

The Great Library is also the "mother" library for all the other libraries on Inanta. Every city and major town has at least one library hooked into the Great Library at Winterborn. The librarian at those libraries can request copies of any tomes, scrolls, or books from the Great Library for the inhabitants of their area. These works still can't leave the library and it still costs to visit the library, but it is much cheaper to visit a City Library or Town Library, than to visit the Great Library. The biggest drawback to a City or Town Library, is they aren't magical like the Great Library, so they can't hold as many books, tomes, and scrolls.

Purpose / Function

The purpose of the Great Library is to hold, preserve and protect all the knowledge of Inanta. It is also the Headquarters of the International Federation of Anthenaems and Analysis.

Architecture

The Great Library foundation is made of dwarven infused stone, laid before even the city of Winterborn was considered more than a village. The walls and floors were made with mage infused wood and stone. The whole place reeks of magic. The building looks like it would only hold the smallest amount of books, scrolls, and tomes. However, the building is bigger on the inside, than on the outside. The building uses the excess magic around it to building new rooms as they are needed.

Tourism

Mostly academics and learners come to the library. Because a fee is needed to even step through the doors, the general public isn't really aware of what the Great Library is or does. Most students have a sponsor who will pay their way into the library, but only for restitution of some kind, usually unique return of some kind from the student. This is how most mage and sorcerer students are able to get into the Great Library. They will barter their skills as magic users for the nobility or those with the money to pay their way into the Great Library.
