Illusory Canvas Item in Ignotas | World Anvil

Illusory Canvas

Scout Report #2, Artifact Retrieval
During our investigation through the outskirts of the Foreverglade forest, we have come across a number of magical currents on the western front. In this scout report, the reason behind these strange currents is explained, at least at surface level.

Conjuration

We identified the magical currents as illusiory spells. Although the caster was nowhere to be found, we did find a number of paintings that displayed the warped lands that we traversed. Upon closer inspection in collaboration with the Arcane Engineer, these paintings were identified as modified spell scrolls. Magical blank canvases that when flooded with art and spell energy create an illusion of what is drawn in the real world.

Conclusion

We suspect that someone, or something is aware of our movements and wants to stay hidden. Although we are in no way educated enough to advise further steps, we suspect the enemy to at least be sentient and civilized enough to conjure up these complex spells. Ao caution is, as always, a well spent merit.

Gameplay Stats

The Illusory Canvas is a single-use magic item on which a player may draw an art piece during a short rest. As an action, a player may activate the painting, creating an illusion resembling whatever is drawn on the canvas. The illusion may influence a persons behaviour, but can not in any way physically harm anyone. Wisdom saves to see through the Illusion can be applied on the DMs discretion.

Flavour thoughts

Adapt this item however you seem fit. Have the DC depend on how well the painint gis drawn? Sure! Set a default DC depending on the rarity of the Cancas? Why not!
