Magic
A brief History of Magic
At The Beginning of Time
As the Gods fought the first war of the world, their anger and passion and love for that which they had created seeped out into the oceans and mountains and forests. To define their peoples, they gave them each a gift.To the selkiefolk, Alixya gave the ability to look into the future and thus the power to protect themselves. To humans, Etrea gave the ability to bend others to their will. She was jealous of Alixya, the elder of the two goddesses, and wanted to be more powerful. Because of this, her anger bled into human society and fed their everlasting need for power. And to the elves, Drae, the youngest god, gifted the ability to protect. He was scared of his sisters' fighting and let his love for his people bleed into the forests.
To the folk of the sea I give my blessing, the blessing of foresight. To look in to the everlasting depths of time and see the future.
When Magic Entered the World
After the first, and final, war of the gods, magic awoke in the world. With it's coming the people thrived, building alliances and friendship based on their gifts and skills. But, the Goddesses were dismayed. In their war they tried to turn their peoples against each other, and they failed. All seemed well for the citizens of Iastarene, however, angry Goddesses are not something to be trifled with...
Wild Magic
A gift of the Gods
Wild magic was gifted by the gods to divide their peoples during the first war and the creation of the world. It is a power that is tied to lineage and cannot be learnt, or gained by other means. For the first few centuries of the world, almost all humanoids had access to magic in one or more forms, but as time goes on, magic becomes less prevalent in the world and those who possess it are few and far between. Those who can cast magic at will are both worshipped and feared for they can create many wonders but also cause great suffering.
Divination and the Loyra
The Loyran folk seem to have been blessed with a magic that has not faded as much as that of those around them. Where for most, to be born with a gift of magic is a rarity, for the Loyra, to be magicless is the more unusual trait. Amongst the Loyra are found diviners and prophets, those that can predict the future. They are treated with reverence by the other selkiefolk as they predicted the beginning of The Great War and saved many selkie lives.
We looked into the future and we saw death. Yet life there was also, and peace in the darkness. Which future will be ours we cannot say; we can only wait and see.
Taught Magic
A Hard Earned Power
Taught magic can be learnt by any individual given enough time and effort. When the Gods fought the first war, some of their powers leaked out into the world. These can be harnessed by any but it is not an easy skill to learn. Even for skilled mages, taught magic is limited. They have only the ability to disguise that which already is, or to make new from old. Even so, taught mages are valued within their communities for their practicality and their ability to solve mundane troubles with relative ease. They tend to be mentors for younger wild mages as their presence has a calming effect.
I spent years learning my skill, yet I am seen as less than those who did nothing to earn their own. The Gods abandoned me so I had to forge my own path, whatever that may bring
Second Best Mages
Despite being highly regarded within their communities, taught mages are often viewed a second best when wild mages are present. Because of this, some taught mages have become jealous and choose to use their powers to cause mayhem and evil.
