Ocilion Settlement in Iaforis | World Anvil

Ocilion

"What's that city over there grandpa?"
"Why that's the old capital, Ocilion. The King used to live there. I served him in my youth, you know."
"Really? Can we go meet him?"
"...Best not...only the dead walk the streets now."
Now abandoned for fifty years, Ocilion was once the largest and most influential city in the Kingdom of Ocila, and served as the seat of House Blackwood, the Ocilan Royal Family, from 28 to 291 OA.

History

Capital of Ocila

In 20 OA, King Tosalis I laid siege to the city of Raykan which at the time was the best-defended settlement in central Dausus. By 22 OA, it and the surrounding lands surrendered to the Kingdom of Ocila and were annexed. As Tosalis's continued his conquest throughout the Four Rivers Valley, it became increasingly clear to him that his capital of Lionspride was no longer well-positioned. In 28 OA, Tosalis moved the throne to Raykan, renaming it Ocilion in the process.   For 263 years, Ocilion would hold this title, until the disaster at the Battle of Fairise Plains threatened to topple the Kingdom. For reasons unknown to this day, King Marcus III's battlemages turned their magics on the Royal Army, destroying it and killing both Marcus and his heir. While the invading Murgothi forces were also destroyed, both armies were raised as mindless undead and marched on the capital. In response, the Royal family and those in the city who could, fled. The rest were slain in a futile last stand. To the relief of the others, the army remained in the city and its outskirts.

Capital of the Dead

Few living souls are foolish enough to try to enter the city. Fewer still are lucky enough to return. Those who do tell tales of undead wandering the streets, almost as if they were going about their daily lives. Buildings are repaired, and animals – though also undead – are tended to. More disturbing, an army trains in formation and individuals appear to spar with each other. Priests and scholars are quick to dismiss these claims as the ravings of madmen, driven insane by the sight of the damned.   Regardless, not even they can deny that on particularly dark nights, torchlight can be seen coming from the upper floors of the Chimera Keep.

Little is known of what happened in the aftermath of the battle. Brokers of Malthrax were sent to the battlefield to resurect the King, but all who returned were the undead.

"...Best not...only the dead walk the streets now."
Oh, that's such a great line to get a reader's attention :D   Who raised the undead, though? It isn't entirely clear. I'd love to know more about this spooky city, it sounds pretty awesome :D

Thanks Q! Good call on the who question. That's still largely unknown, but I've added a section clarifying that.
