Mihrab

The Mihrab is the actual tomb within the Amaranthine Sepulchre of Jeharoa where the Coiled Hermit Kōs is said to have received the visions that would one day be given to the Qosaari and turned into Kōsism's holiest text, Faal Stahdim Ven.

Purpose / Function

This is the oldest part of the temple where Kōsites believe Kōs, while in his mortal form, first had his visions that would come to be known as the Faal Stahdim Ven. This was originally an Ashkelonian tomb that Kōs found and stayed in and so it is built into the earth itself. As such, pilgrims crawl along the floor down many steps before reaching the caverns niche. There they leave offerings and pray to Kōs. Temple acolytes stand by to help the older pilgrims down the steps and also to keep the line moving. Deposited offerings are collected at the end of the day and kept in the Sepulchre’s treasury.

Sensory & Appearance

A long line of supplicants wait on the outside of this structure. You see a temple, with the largest copper-green dome in the entire complex. The exterior is made of dark, natural stone. As you follow the supplicants, you see many of them get down on their knees and begin crawling along the floor. Through the Sepulchre doorway, the chamber descends carving its way through the earth. Small niches in the sides of the structure hold tiny images from the scriptures of Kōs—small serpents and saints illuminated by long tapers of candlewax. The air is thick and humid and filled with smoky incense. Finally, you see a small niche, five feet wide and ten feet tall. It seems to have been carved into the bedrock of the earth itself. Against the wall of the niche you see a dark red spiral stain. Offerings cover the space before it and worshippers, tears in their eyes approach the spiral and press their hands to it. Their eyes are locked when they suddenly pull their hand back. There is a dull warmth behind this spiral, a heartbeat that reassures the worshipper of the presence of the divine.
