The Undefeated Highland Clans of Mérulad
A hard, mountainous country on the island of Mérulad that has resisted all attempts by the Tamorese to incorporate it. The country is divided into the Coasthills to the northwest and the Highmounts to the southeast, with the majority of the population of living to the northwest. In times of great need, a moot is called to find a king to lead the country. All of the maers assemble at the ancient site of Eldermark and cast lots for the honor of leading the Maddrell.
Structure
Largely comprised of dwarves, mountain gnomes and stout halflings, this province is ruled by maers, or chieftains who protect their small farming communities but rallied together when under threat.

Foreign Relations
The Palladians attempted to conquer Maddrell during the twilight years of their Era, but failed in a dramatic battle at Gol Grunhal. Since then, the Palladian Era's successor state in the region, the Kingdom of Tamory has long wanted to take the highlands for their own but have lacked the resources to do so. A tentative alliance has been forged between the two, though hawkish lords and maers on both sides look across the border and see the potential for a glorious and bloody war.
Maddrell was among the first to receive Varskogan migrants from across the Kanaloa or Silver Ocean. Several brief but bloody wars were fought between the dwarves and the invaders but the Maddrellans remained in power and drove most of the Varskogan hosts back to the shore. Most of the Varskogans continued south to settle in Varangia but some did integrate into Maddrellan society. Today, the descendants of those first Varskogans frequently raid the Maddrellan Coastlands, taking plunder and thralls back to their icy peninsula.
