Cangiant ink
WIP - Summer Camp quality. This will continue to be edited during July and likely after the prizes adjudication.
CW: mention of sexual themes, not detailed
In the depths of the Svajan Sea, lives a mollusc of a striking red colour that is highly seeked out by the inhabitants of Hislariya, in particular by a few makarids clans.
The colour changing ink present in its ink sac, in fact, is used by the Makarids of the Zemesh clan for the ritual tattoos of their most esteemed members. When a makarid is deemed worthy of the rank of Izir or Miyik, they get their lineage tattoos decorated with intricate embellishments with the cangiant ink.
The resource is extremely rare, due to the fact that the animal lives at depths that are very risky to reach for humanoid creatures. The Zemesh clan obviate to this by the employment of a magic chant that temporarily enances the resistance to pressure and the breathing capacity of one creature.
Even with this precaution, the risks are so high that only one or two individuals per generation are trained for the task and the capture of the creature is so difficult even with the magic that most of the divers only manage to capture one of the molluscs in their entire career.
This makes the material extremely rare and precious, and only a few vials are warded in the vaults of Tanirath's Academy. The extraction is luckily easy, once the animal is captured, as it is stored in its ink sacs and ready to be used as is, but the diver needs to be careful to not spook the creature because that will cause it to release the ink and dazzle the diver, and of course wasting all the costly resource.
The tresured ink is trusted only to the hands of the most skilled of tattoo artists, and only under the supervision of at least three high ranking members of the Clan during the ritual ceremony of investment.
The tattoo itself is also quite more painful than a regular one as the ink is mildly urticant when injected, but the makarids bare the short lived discomfort with pride, and sometimes with some mild arousal.
A very small vial of the ink has been occasionally retrieved by the therapists from the drawers of the senses' chest and Yarik is currently investigating possible uses of it in a therapy setting.
ok - just for the record, CW: mention of sexual themes, not detailed combined with "ritual tattoos of their most esteemed members" made me laugh.
