River Lefnui

The River Lefnui is fifth longest river of Middle Earth.

Geography

Course

The River Lefnui rises in the White Mountains before running southwest through the Nan-i-Feryn to Saerthondost. It then turns northwest until it meets the River Nimthond, and thereafter turns southwards, through the Nan Lefnui to the great sea in its estuary at the Lond Feren.

Navigation

The river is navigable by keel-boats for about 70 miles (To Avadalinda ) and by flat-boats for a further 70 or more (depending on river levels - as far as Lefbridge in low water and Annogwain at high water). After that the river is fast flowing, shallow and braided with many rapids to its source. The lowest portions of the river are unfordable for 100 miles and uncrossed in that distance except for a single bridge at Annulond.

Ecosystem

The river is well stocked with fish.

The ecosystem is being subjected to the introduction of a plethora of new species - the Dragonlands appear to have brought a menagerie with them and some of these creatures are doing well now that they have been released into the wild - to the detriment of existing species in some cases. The most worrying introduction is what appear to be a series of Dragons!

Ecosystem Cycles

The river is lowest during the late autumn, rises slowly over winter and then comes into full flood in early spring. Thereafter, the river level tends to slowly fall until it eventually reaches its lowest in late autumn.
